This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and Indonesia was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. Over the decades, China has become Indonesia's largest trading partner and the second-largest source of foreign investment, leading to increasingly close ties in various fields.
Recently, Ben Perkasa Drajat, the Consul General of Indonesia in Guangzhou, shared his insights in an interview with Yangcheng Evening News. He expressed his fondness for the ongoing Canton Fair, particularly intrigued by Chinese manufacturing, especially electric vehicles.
Indonesia was among the earliest countries to establish diplomatic ties with China. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 1990, mutual political trust, as well as economic, personnel, and cultural exchanges, have deepened.
Ben Perkasa Drajat noted that the relationship between Indonesia and China is built on mutual respect, shared values, and common interests. For decades, the two countries have established solid connections in political, economic, and socio-cultural realms.
China is Indonesia's largest trading partner, and both countries benefit from their strong trade relationship. In 2023, bilateral trade surged to 139.26 billion dollar, while Chinese investments in Indonesia reached 7.4 billion dollar, making China the second-largest investor in Indonesia.
The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail is a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative and pragmatic cooperation between China and Indonesia, having been in operation for a year. Ben Perkasa Drajat mentioned that he has ridden the "Whoosh" train, noting its similarities to Chinese high-speed trains. He emphasized that the rail significantly enhances travel efficiency and reduces travel time. "I hope to see more cooperation between Indonesia and China in infrastructure development in the future," he added.
As both countries are populous, their consumer markets hold tremendous potential. Currently, several Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, have implemented visa exemptions for Chinese tourists. When asked about Indonesia's stance on this matter, Ben Perkasa Drajat revealed that discussions are underway regarding visa exemptions for Chinese visitors. For now, Chinese nationals can obtain a visa on arrival in Indonesia.
As the 136th Canton Fair unfolds, it's worth noting that Yangcheng Evening News has invited Indonesian media representatives to cover the event. Ben Perkasa Drajat expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I've attended the Canton Fair multiple times and truly enjoyed it. I have a keen interest in the automotive sector and have visited several major car manufacturers, such as BYD, Wuling , and GAC. Observing their current growth, I believe Indonesia's future in the electric vehicle industry is promising."
