On the 7:00 PM of September 10th local time, the 47th WorldSkills Competition kicked off in Lyon, France.
Hailed as the "Skills Olympics", the WorldSkills Competition brings together young talents from across the globe. In this event, excelling in tasks like applying putty or tightening screws can make someone a world champion, as can mastering hairstyling, dough making, or programming robots.
After five years of preparation, this year's competition is set to be the largest skills event in the world, with more than 1,400 contestants from nearly 70 countries and regions participating. The competition features 62 events, 59 of which are official categories, while 3 are demonstration events. This year, six new categories will be showcased for the first time: additive manufacturing, digital construction, industrial design technology, optoelectronic technology, renewable energy, and robot system integration.
The Chinese team, a delegation of 68 contestants, will compete in all 59 skill areas, spanning six major categories: transportation and logistics, construction and building technology, manufacturing and engineering technology, information and communication technology, creative arts and fashion, and social and personal services. The average age of the Chinese contestants is 22. This marks China's seventh time participating in the competition, with the largest delegation and the most comprehensive range of events since its debut.
As one of the earliest provinces in China to take part in the WorldSkills Competition, Guangdong has sent 27 contestants this year. They will compete in 23 events, including CNC milling, CNC turning, additive manufacturing, autonomous mobile robotics, and refrigeration and air conditioning.
Guangdong's contestants will participate in events spanning five categories: construction and building technology, creative arts and fashion, information and communication technology, manufacturing and engineering technology, and social and personal services. Many of these fields are part of advanced manufacturing, strategic emerging industries, and modern services, aligning closely with Guangdong's industrial development.
Since officially joining WorldSkills in 2010, China's trajectory in the skills domain has been remarkable. At the 41st WorldSkills Competition in 2011, China made its debut by participating in six events and winning a silver medal in welding along with five excellence awards. This marked China's initial rise on the international skills stage.
From its first gold medal at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in 2015 to topping the gold medal, overall medal, and team points rankings in 2017, China's rapid progress has established the country as a leader in global skills.
The results of the WorldSkills Competition serve as an important benchmark for a nation's technical and skills development. It reflects not only the country's economic and technical strength and talent competitiveness but also its capacity for innovation and creativity.
Over the past decade, China's participation in the WorldSkills Competition has helped to build a more robust vocational skills training, selection, and incentive system. More importantly, it has fostered widespread recognition of the value of skills, inspiring countless young people to pursue technical careers and contribute to the country through their expertise.
