Recently, a young boy from Mongolia was successfully treated for a rare and complex disease at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University in Guangzhou. The medical team performed a successful bladder tumor resection and constructed a new bladder using his own sigmoid colon, sparing him from the lifelong burden of a urine bag.
In November 2023, this three-year-old boy suddenly had difficulty urinating accompanied by sharp pain in the urethra, eventually passing blood-tinged urine after two days. Alarmed by the symptoms, his parents rushed him to a local hospital, where a cystoscopy biopsy suggested a rare malignant tumor with slim chances of recovery. Desperate for a second opinion, they sent the pathology slides to Japan, only to receive the same diagnosis.
Given that China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region borders Mongolia, they decided to seek treatment there, hoping for a chance at recovery. Following a local doctor's recommendation, they chose to seek medical care at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University in Guangzhou.
Seeking treatment in Guangzhou was challenging for his parents due to language barriers. Fortunately, their online plea for help was answered by a kind-hearted resident from Inner Mongolia in Guangzhou, who offered free translation assistance. In December 2023, the boy's family arrived at the hospital.
After reviewing various reports, the specialized team at the hospital's Bladder Tumor Center devised a treatment plan for the boy. Under the care of pediatric oncology specialists, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was administered, reducing the tumor size by approximately 50% within a month.
With robotic assistance, the medical team performed surgery to remove the tumor completely and used the boy's sigmoid colon to construct a new bladder. This procedure spared him from the lifelong burden of a urine bag. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical staff, he made a smooth recovery and was recently discharged from the hospital.
