According to data released by Shenzhen Customs on March 19th,in the first two months of 2024, Shenzhen's total import and export value reached 675.18 billion yuan, an increase of 45% year-on-year (the same below), the highest in history. Among them, exports amounted to 441.44 billion yuan, with a growth of 53.1%, while imports totaled 233.74 billion yuan, with a growth of 31.9%.

For 31 consecutive years, Shenzhen has been the leading city in the Chinese mainland for foreign trade exports, earning itself a title of an "excellent student" in foreign trade. But what lies behind the city's impressive performance in foreign trade?

As a city dominated by private enterprises, Shenzhen's foreign trade in the first two months of 2024 saw an increase of over 70%, which served as the main driving force for foreign trade growth. According to relevant data, the import and export value of private enterprises in Shenzhen reached 483.6 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 72.4%. This accounted for 71.6% of the city's total import and export value, marking an 11.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

In terms of general trade, Shenzhen saw a growth of 76.7% in import and export value, reaching 406.04 billion yuan in the first two months. This accounted for 60.1% of the total value, marking a rise of 10.8 percentage points in proportion. During the same period, bonded logistics import and export amounted to 149.53 billion yuan, marking a growth of 35.4%, accounting for 22.1% of the total. Processing trade import and export reached 114.53 billion yuan, a decrease of 5.8%, accounting for 17%.

Analysis suggests that the robust development of private enterprises in Shenzhen since the start of 2024 is closely related to the favorable policies.Onone hand, with the high-quality implementation of multiple free trade agreements such as RCEP, an increasing number of import enterprises are enjoying substantial tariff reductions and preferential treatment. In the first two months of 2024, Shenzhen Customs received 16.574 billion yuan worth of imported goods under various free trade agreements, implemented tariff preferences of 17.59 billion yuan for them, benefiting over 2,300 enterprises.

With the gradual release of benefits from free trade agreements such as RCEP, the enthusiasm of enterprises to explore overseas markets has been growing. In the first two months of 2024, Shenzhen Customs issued a total of 99,100 certificates of origin for export enterprises in its jurisdiction, with a total value of 20.292 billion yuan, representing an increase of 33.36% and 5.70%, respectively.

On the other hand, as of now, the total number of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) enterprises in Shenzhen has exceeded 500 for the first time. In 2023, AEO enterprises accounted for only 0.26% of the total number of enterprises but contributed 47% to the import and export value, making them the strongest force in Shenzhen's foreign trade. The dividends from AEO policies continue to provide a steady source of power for Shenzhen's foreign trade.

The rapid growth of Shenzhen's exports and continuous breakthroughs in developed markets can be attributed to sustained technological and product innovation. In the first two months of 2024, the export value of electromechanical products from Shenzhen reached 295.5 billion yuan, a growth of 30.2%, accounting for 66.9% of the total export value. Furthermore, exports of mobile phones, computers, household appliances, and audiovisual equipment totaled 68.37 billion yuan, with a growth of 24.7%. The "new three heroes," namely lithium-ion batteries, electric passenger vehicles, and solar cells, are selling well both at home and abroad.
