Recently, an event titled "Time Leap to Han Tang Watertown, Search for Li Bai and Treasures" was held in Watertown Street at Nansha Bay, Guangzhou. That night, tourists from near and far gathered in Han-style clothes, and started a night tour around the Tang-style bazaar. On the scene, the street was bustling with live vocal performances, ancient-style parades, traditional stalls and treasure-hunting activities, ushering the stream of tourists into the glorious age of the Tang Dynasty hundreds of years ago, with brilliant lights and exciting parties.
Watertown Street in Nansha boasts a beautiful natural landscape and unique architectural style. The event managed to create an ancient atmosphere based on these environmental elements. Through the building of the theme scenes, an immersive multi-dimensional ancient bazaar was formed, allowing people from all walks of life in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to soak themselves into the prosperity of the glorious age. All the participants of the event, be they the guests, the visitors or the staff, were dressed in Han-style clothes. Walking through Watertown Street, watching the splendid lights shed on the faces of the passers-by, you would have an illusion that everything seemed to be back in ancient times.
A variety of ancient-style stalls were set at the scene, including food stalls and stalls selling ancient handicrafts, pressed-flower handicrafts, and intangible cultural heritage products such as sugar paintings, paper cuttings, agilawood-made incense sticks and Cloisonne Enamel, fully displaying the beauty of traditional Chinese culture to the tourists. Chen, a student of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who participated in the night tour, said in excitement: "I've finally got to see the intangible cultural heritages that only appeared in textbooks and on the Internet before. Our traditional culture is fabulous. I hope more youngsters from Hong Kong and Macao can have a deeper understanding of our culture, which is soul-stirring."
There were also a number of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) on the scene, playing the roles of Tang poets or sedan bearers. Dressed in Han-style costumes, their job was to interact with the tourists, making the whole ancient setting even more authentic. The tourists themselves have also become one of the elements of the whole setting, contributing to this splendid picture of the Tang Dynasty.
Immersive shows such as Han-style clothes parade, "Tang Tumblers", "Songs on the Rainbow Bridge", "A Song of Pure Happiness" and "Concubine Outing" took turns to add radiance and beauty to the night scenes of the Watertown, serving as an audio-visual feast. Revolving around the storyline of finding Li Bai, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty, all these performances were poetically interconnected with each other, fully demonstrating the brilliance of the Tang culture. Making full use of the watertown landscape, the solid view performance enabled the performers to coordinate with the scenes immersively, thus creating an illusional and wonderful effect.
Youngsters from the internship program for Hong Kong and Macao students held by Nansha authorities were also invited to participate in the event. Either as tourists or as performers, they have joined in the night tour activities of Watertown Street to enjoy the feast of traditional Chinese culture. The event has not only presented the lively atmosphere of the glorious ages during Han and Tang Dynasties, but has also injected the elements of traditional culture into the activities, helping the Hong Kong and Macao compatriots to deepen their sense of identity and belonging to traditional Chinese culture.
