At the launch ceremony of the 13th China International Animation Copyright Fair on July 20th, Dongguan was officially awarded the plaque of "Capital of Art Toys in China", thus becoming the first city in China to receive this title of honor from the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association since its construction work of characteristic areas of the industry and the industrial clusters started.
That is a result of long-term accumulation, rather than an overnight success. Data show that Dongguan is currently the largest toy exporter in China with over 4,000 toy manufacturers and nearly 1,500 upstream and downstream related enterprises. A quarter of animation derivatives around the world and about 85% of art toys in China are produced in Dongguan. Typical examples from Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympics to La'eeb, the mascot of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022; from LAURA to Lyu Bu the Doom Mecha are countless. Behind these art toys, whether you are familiar with them or not, the closed loop formed by various enterprises featuring industrial design, mold manufacturing, materials & chemical engineering, textiles & garments, and printing & packaging, has laid a solid foundation for Dongguan's reputation of "the best toy manufacturer in China and the world".
Thanks to the experience accumulated during the in-depth study of the market segments, Dongguan's art toys were able to become widely known around the world, turning people's traditional impression of this city from a "foundry" to a "trendy leader". Besides Dongguan's art toys, an increasing number of products "made in Guangdong", from clothing and home appliances to UAVs and NEVs, are also leading the trend with their hidden momentum in various manufacturing market segments. The global popularity of these made-in-Guangdong products is no longer the result of a simple price advantage, but the achievement of their upgraded quality and technical advantages.
The vitality and confidence of "Made in Guangdong" also rest in the huge industrial clusters. In recent years, Guangdong has cultivated 20 strategic industrial clusters from a high starting point and formed 8 trillion-level industrial clusters. Complete supporting facilities, elaborate division of labor, mature industrial clusters and highly collaborative manufacturing networks add up to Guangdong's tremendous advantages in comprehensive manufacturing. According to data, the first quarter of 2023 has witnessed revenue of 4.61 trillion yuan achieved by the 20 industrial clusters around the province, marking an increase of 1.14 trillion yuan and accounting for nearly 40% of the GDP. Such revenue has become a strong support for Guangdong to prioritize the manufacturing industry and boost high-quality development. Riding the wave of the booming manufacturing industry, industrial clusters like the art toys in Dongguan, the wedding gowns in Chaozhou, the decorative lighting in Zhongshan, and the UAVs in Shenzhen, have taken full advantage of the complete supporting facilities and high-level technologies in Guangdong. With an emphasis on the professional division of labor within the industrial chain, they have managed to enter the global industrial chain, value chain and innovation chain, bringing more made-in-Guangdong products to the global markets.
As a significant manufacturing base in the world, "Made in Guangdong" also requires a broader global vision. Starting with the art toys of Dongguan, the cross-border flow and product services of various factors have broadened the room for imagination that "Made in Guangdong" will reach the high end of the global value chain. In the near future, what position will "Made in Guangdong" occupy on the global industrial map? As Guangdong shouts out its clangorous slogan of "prioritizing manufacturing", strives to promote its modern industrial system, and straightens its back in the modernization construction process, the specific answer to this question is becoming more and more significant to the world.
