On the afternoon of April 7th, French President Macron engaged with students at Sun Yat-sen University, highlighting the long-standing history of cultural exchange between Guangzhou and France. The first French merchant ship that came here carried mathematicians and scientists, indicating the importance of scientific and knowledge exchange as a means of fostering friendship and cooperation. "We firmly believe that this is the way to sustain friendship and it has proven to be uniquely effective," he said.
Macron also noted that there is much work to be done to address the challenges facing the world today, and stressed the need for collaboration between China and France. In particular, he highlighted the importance of working together to tackle issues such as climate change and biodiversity protection, in order to prioritize ecological considerations in economic growth. In these aspects, China, France, and Europe still have a long way to go and a lot of responsibilities to shoulder. The Institut franco-chinois de I'énergie nucléaire niversité Sun Yat-sen (IFCEN), the nuclear engineering department of Sun Yat-sen University, is working towards these goals.
French President Macron announced the establishment of the China-France Center for Carbon Neutrality during his visit to China, encouraging young students to take on the challenge of carbon reduction through research and innovation in order to achieve carbon neutrality. "I firmly believe that our two countries can continue to advance new partnerships in science and technology," he said.
Macron emphasized that advancing together requires not only diplomatic and economic relationships but also academic relationships for mutual exchange and understanding. Thus, he stressed the importance of humanistic exchanges through the learning of language, history, and culture, and the sharing of knowledge and science. These efforts will allow both countries to create a passionate and collaborative future.
Macron welcomed Chinese students to come and study in France and learn about French culture and civilization. He expressed that this is an opportunity for France to send more scholars and students to China.
"In today's rapidly changing world, the path of patient mutual understanding is indispensable," Macron called for continuing to develop cooperation among partners such as Sun Yat-sen University, Université de Lyon, and Sorbonne Université.
"I firmly believe that we should respect our differences, be curious about the differences, and if we can maintain these differences in a friendly way, we can meet the great challenges of this century together. This should be the responsibility of your generation," Macron said.
