Huaqiangbei robot band tells stories of Shenzhen's makers

On October 14th, a robot band created by local makers made its debut at the Huaqiangbei AI Eight Steeds International Must Buy ListCatwalk Show, performing "Seeing Tomorrow in Huaqiangbei" and drawing crowds of Chinese and international visitors. Dong Wutian, founder of Hixbot and the song's creator, gave an exclusive interview to Yangcheng Evening News about the stories behind the song and his entrepreneurial journey.

"Seeing tomorrow in Huaqiangbei"

"Design in the morning, prototype in the afternoon, mass-produce the next day and ship overseas within a week" is known as the "Shenzhen cycle." The song is an artistic expression of this rapid industrial pace. Preparations for the song took just two days, with its lyrics drawn from the real-life experiences of makers in Huaqiangbei. The team worked through the night to 3D-print and modify the robots' designs, capturing Huaqiangbei's trademark speed of innovation. Dong Wutian said the song expresses the shared voice of the maker community.

Modding robots at a one-meter counter

Dong has been rooted in Huaqiangbei for a decade. He started his business at a counter less than one meter wide in the SEG electronics market. His team focuses on secondary customization and modification of robots. Leveraging the local well-developed supply chain and AI technology, it developed the robot band in just three months, with 30% of its components made in-house. The band has taken the stage at various exhibitions many times.

Every Huaqiangbei maker has a song

Dong is a microcosm of Huaqiangbei's grassroots makers. Covering 1.45 square kilometers, Huaqiangbei has a complete hardware supply chain, where the "Shenzhen cycle" continues to unfold. Huaqiangbei has now launched a global call for submissions for its theme song, inviting works from China and abroad to tell the stories of innovation and hard work in the district through artistic expression.
