A high-speed train departs as frequently as every 40 seconds, while daily passenger arrivals and departures exceed 1 million. During this year's National Day holiday, Guangzhou South Railway Station once again trended on social media for its heavy passenger traffic.

On October 1st, Guangzhou South Railway Station operated 1,252 train services and handled 1.049 million passenger arrivals and departures, both setting new records, making it the first railway station in China to handle more than 1 million passenger arrivals and departures in a single day.

But if we see this only as a railway transportation record, we may still be missing its broader economic significance.

For Guangzhou, Guangzhou South Railway Station is a gateway for the city's economic activity. In 2025, the station handled 175 million passenger arrivals and departures over the year. The huge demand for business, tourism and consumption underpins the sustained movement of people.

Looking beyond Guangzhou, the station is also an important node in the economic network of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai and Hong Kong are closely connected. The passenger flows through Guangzhou South reflect not only the movement of people in one city, but also the economic vitality of the GBA.

On a national scale, the Beijing-Guangzhou, Guiyang-Guangzhou, Nanning-Guangzhou and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railways converge here, connecting the economic hinterland of southern China with markets across the country. Behind the movement of people is the flow of business, industries, talent, capital and consumption.

So, while "a train every 40 seconds" may appear to be simply a sign of railway transport capacity, it is ultimately a reflection of the real demand of a vast economic network for the efficient movement of economic resources.

Spanning from Guangzhou to the GBA and then to the whole country, Guangzhou South Railway Station connects urban economies, regional integration and the national unified market. This is the economic story worthy of deeper exploration behind the million-passenger volume.

40秒一趟车，从“百万客流”看广州南站背后的经济活力

最短40秒发出一趟高铁，单日到发旅客突破100万人次。这个国庆假期，广州南站再次因为“太忙了”冲上热搜。

10月1日，广州南站开行营业列车1252列，到发旅客104.9万人次，均创历史新高，成为全国铁路首个单日到发旅客突破100万人次的车站。

但如果只把它看作铁路运输纪录，或许还没有真正看懂背后的经济意义。

对广州而言，南站是城市经济的“流量入口”。2025年，广州南站全年到发1.75亿人次。庞大的商务、文旅和消费需求，支撑着持续的人流往来。

跳出广州看，南站更是粤港澳大湾区经济网络的重要节点。广州、深圳、佛山、东莞、珠海、香港等城市联系紧密，南站承载的不只是一座城市的人流，更折射出整个湾区的经济活力。

放大到全国，京广、贵广、南广、广深港等高铁线路在此交汇，将华南经济腹地与全国市场连接起来。人流背后，是商务、产业、人才、资本和消费的流动。

所以，“40秒一趟车”表面是铁路运输能力，背后却是庞大经济网络对高效要素流动的真实需求。

从广州到大湾区，再到全国，广州南站连接的正是城市经济、区域一体化和全国统一大市场。这，才是“百万客流”背后更值得关注的经济密码。
