Guangdong's animation industry undergoes landmark shift from quantity to quality

During the 2026 summer movie season, nearly 80 films are slated for release, with Guangdong-produced animated films emerging as an undeniable force. Meanwhile, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Animation Film Week is scheduled to take place in Dongguan from August 6th to 10th, featuring a diverse lineup that includes immersive screenings and venture capital incubation. Guangdong animation is making a landmark transition from quantity to quality.

The annual output value of Guangdong’s animation and comic industry has surpassed 60 billion yuan, accounting for roughly one-third of the national total. One out of every three animated productions in China originates from Guangdong, where animation and film-related enterprises now number 206,000. In 2025, Guangdong accounted for nearly a quarter of the nation's total in both the number and cumulative running time of released television animation series. The industrial capacity of Guangdong animation is vividly demonstrated by the "Boonie Bears" franchise, which has delivered a theatrical feature every Spring Festival since 2014, backed by Fantawild’s end-to-end supply chain operations spanning creative R&D to post-production rendering. Meanwhile, the region's original creative power is exemplified by "I Am What I Am" and "Into the Mortal World". Rooted in the Lingnan awakening lion dance culture, "I Am What I Am" grossed 249 million yuan at the box office. "Into the Mortal World" successfully forged a path integrating industry and education, evolving from a university student assignment into a feature film on the international stage, currently distributed to over 40 countries and regions worldwide.

Looking ahead to the next two years, a promising pipeline of projects—including "Yingge Dance" and "Zhaojun Crossing the Border"—is ready for launch. Spanning mythology, martial arts, history, intangible cultural heritage, science fiction, comedy, and realism, this upcoming slate covers virtually every mainstream genre. Guangdong animation is swiftly evolving from a production powerhouse into a creative hub, driving a profound transformation from quantity to quality.
