The 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) International Film Festival took place from July 15th to 20th in Cholpon-Ata, a city on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. "Dear You", a Teochew-dialect film produced in Guangdong, stood out among entries from multiple countries and won the Best Director Award.

On July 18th, the film screened in the festival's international competition program to a fully packed theater. During the screening, many viewers were moved to tears by the story. After the credits rolled, applause lasted for a long time, and filmmakers from various countries approached director Lan Hongchun to share their thoughts. "The core theme I want to convey through this film is 'qingyi'—a concept that embodies loyalty, integrity, duty, and compassion," Lan said. "It is the simplest and most cherished life philosophy of ordinary Chinese people. To be kind-hearted and always grateful to those who have helped you—these are qualities I saw in my father and grandparents growing up."
On the evening of July 19th, "Dear You" won the Best Director Award at the closing ceremony. It stood out among competing films from multiple countries thanks to its sincere storytelling, authentic performances and cross-language human resonance. This honor is not only recognition of the film's artistic quality, but also another successful showcase of Chinese culture on the international stage. It marks the first international film award for both "Dear You" and Lan Hongchun.
Set against the backdrop of Teochew qiaopi culture—the tradition of overseas Chinese remittance letters—the film tells a story of family correspondence spanning mountains and oceans. Previously, it had grossed nearly 2 billion yuan at the domestic box office and over 70 million yuan overseas, with a 9.3 rating on review platform Douban. Its award at the festival marks the further expansion of this outstanding cinematic work's cultural influence onto the global stage.
