As the 2026 Chinese New Year holiday approaches, more people are taking extra leave to extend the nine-day break, spurring an early surge in outbound travel from Guangzhou. The Pazhou-Hong Kong-Macao Passenger Ferry Terminal is also brimming with distinctive festive vibes. Data from local travel agencies indicates a sharp rise in demand for mid- to long-distance outbound travel. In the week before Chinese New Year's Eve, GZL International Travel Service Ltd. (GZL) is expected to dispatch nearly 300 outbound tour groups, with 8-12 days long-distance products making up 65% of the total. Traveling during the Chinese New Year has become a new trend among Guangzhou locals.

This year, two outbound travel peaks emerged before the Chinese New Year. The first wave peaked on February 9th, with travelers favoring 8-12 days long-distance itineraries to Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and Europe to celebrate the New Year abroad. The second peak arrived on February 13th, with GZL alone dispatching over a thousand tourists in outbound groups that day to popular destinations including Europe, New Zealand, Egypt, and Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, as group tours from China to Canada resumed, an inaugural tour also set off on the same day.

Unlike the first peak, the travel surge on February 13th saw 5-7 days short- to mid-distance trips climb to 48% of bookings, matching the share of long-distance options. Southeast Asia emerged as a standout destination, owing to its easier visa policies, short flight durations, warm climate, and lively New Year celebrations.

Currently, most pre-holiday outbound tours have closed to bookings, but visa-free or visa-friendly destinations such as Russia, Malaysia, and Thailand still have available spots. Domestic travel offers ample choices—high-speed rail and flight tours to Fujian, Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River), Sichuan, and Yunnan remain well-stocked.

Passenger traffic at the Pazhou-Hong Kong-Macao Passenger Ferry Terminal continues to climb, with recent daily throughput doubling the usual levels, characterized by overlapping waves of family reunion trips and cross-border tourism.
