One month ago, the resonant sound of a ship's whistle echoed across Maxie Bay as Zhanjiang Bay 1, the world's first floating, dynamically positioned cage-type aquaculture vessel, was officially delivered in Zhanjiang. The vessel is slated to head toward waters roughly 30 nautical miles off Naozhou Island to begin routine comprehensive offshore aquaculture testing and research.

In July 2025, Guangdong's largest intelligent aquaculture platform, Hengyi No. 1, which has been in operation for a full year, achieved its first major harvest. This offshore "sea fortress" consists of six independent large-scale breeding cages with depths reaching up to 25 meters.

Integrating a novel configuration of a central platform with ship-shaped hulls at both ends and the cutting-edge "cruising aquaculture" mode, this "steel giant whale" has truly realized the capability of migrating alongside the fish. It can proactively select sea areas with optimal water temperature, currents, and climatic conditions, avoid severe weather, and allow fish inside to grow healthily in a quasi-natural environment.

During harvest seasons, fishermen steer vessels alongside the deep-sea cages and deploy mechanical booms to lower nets. As the large nets are gradually tightened, fish surge to the surface, and more than 50 tonnes of fish are hauled aboard. These freshly caught fish are then transported via cold-chain logistics to consumers nationwide.

So far, Guangdong has deployed 7,498 gravity-type deep-water net cages, ranking first in the country and representing a 40% increase from the end of 2022. Meanwhile, truss-type net cages have expanded to 18, a fivefold increase over the same period. In 2024, the volume of deep-water cage aquaculture reached 16.82 million cubic meters, nearly five times the volume at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). Key industry technologies and equipment, such as unmanned intelligent feeding vessels, underwater robots, and feeding drones, have also started field testing.
