The 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games officially kicked off on December 9th. This marks the first time that the Games are co-hosted by the three regions of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, and only the second time in history that the National Para Games and Special Olympics are being held in the same year and the same locations as the National Games of China.
This year's Games feature 46 sports, attracting 7,824 athletes from 34 delegations across China. Both the scale of the delegations and the number of athletes participating in the Mass Participation Event have reached record highs.

Specifically, the Guangdong competition zone hosts 34 sports, the Hong Kong competition zone hosts four sports plus the Para Table Tennis (TT11) competition, and the Macao competition zone hosts two sports. A total of 11 cities across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao are involved in hosting the competitions. Some events have already commenced or concluded. From December 8th to 15th, the Games will involve 5,398 athletes, 2,746 referees, 115 classifiers, and 2,772 coaches and staff, with the total scale exceeding 11,000 people, an increase of approximately 30% from the previous edition of the Games.
It is reported that the Guangdong competition zone has established 36 venues, 22 of which are shared with the 15th National Games. To meet the needs of disabled athletes and spectators, a "permanent-temporary integration" approach has been adopted to enhance the barrier-free environment. This includes upgrading barrier-free facilities such as accessible elevators, wheelchair ramps, and blind sidewalks in the competition venues, as well as adding wheelchair and companion seating. These facilities will all be available for sustainable use after the Games.
Currently, Games volunteers are progressively taking up their posts, providing essential services such as event guidance and sign language communication for athletes and spectators. In the Guangdong competition zone alone, 15,000 Games volunteers are involved in the service work.
