"I've learned cataract surgery!" In the first half of 2025, Dr. Nafeesa Abdul Latheef from Hulhumalé Hospital in the Maldives completed a three-month training program at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University and received her certificate of completion. She expressed her hope to teach the surgical skills she had mastered to more doctors back in the Maldives.

"In our hospital, no doctors were previously able to perform phacoemulsification surgery," said Dr. Nafeesa, who works at Hulhumalé Hospital in the capital of the Maldives, Malé. She told reporters that there is a significant number of cataract patients locally in the Maldives, yet only three doctors nationwide can perform cataract surgery independently. From February to May 2025, Dr. Nafeesa underwent training at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. In the Cataract Department, she rotated through outpatient clinics, had the opportunity to observe in the operating room, and then practiced in the simulation laboratory.

Tan Xuhua, Associate Chief Physician of the Cataract Department at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, explained that Dr. Nafeesa had a certain foundation and could diagnose and treat common eye conditions and diseases, but had no experience in performing cataract surgery before. "Based on her situation, we developed a personalized training plan for her."

Besides the training, Dr. Nafeesa expressed, "Even though I'm so far from my home, I didn't feel like I'm  so  far  because  everyone here is so close and friendly. I was so happy in this city and felt really welcomed."

在穗学习的马尔代夫医生：我学会白内障手术了｜粤行万里 仁心无疆

“我学会白内障手术了！”今年上半年，来自马尔代夫胡鲁马累医院（Hulhumalé Hospital）的医生Nafeesa Abdul Latheef在中山大学中山眼科中心进行了为期三个月的培训，拿到了结业证书。她表示，回到马尔代夫后，希望将掌握的手术技术教给当地的更多医生。

“在我们医院，以前都没有医生能够开展超声乳化晶体摘除手术。”Nafysa医生在首都马累的胡鲁马累医院工作，她告诉记者，马尔代夫当地白内障患者非常多，全国能够独立开展白内障手术的医生却只有3名。今年2月-5月，Nafysa在中山大学中山眼科中心接受培训。在白内障科，Nafysa在门诊检查室轮转，有机会进入手术室观摩然后在模拟实验室中进行练习。

中山大学中山眼科中心白内障科副主任医师谈旭华介绍，Nafysa具有一定基础，能够掌握眼科的常见病多发病的诊治，但是之前不会做白内障手术。“针对她的情况，我们给她制定了个性化的培训方案。”

培训之余，Nafysa表示：“虽然我远离家乡，但我并不觉得离家很远。因为这里的人都非常亲切，每个人都很友好，我在这座城市非常开心，感受到了他们的热情。”
