Ten years ago, the "Bright Journey" medical team from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University embarked on its medical aid mission in Fiji. Recently, the team returned to Suva, the capital of Fiji, bringing renewed eyesight to local residents.

Professor Chen Weirong from the Cataract Department of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center has many years of experience in overseas medical aid. Drawing on solid clinical practice and deep management insight, she has developed a set of overseas medical aid practices that are of international reference value.

When the team first arrived in Fiji, local residents were unfamiliar with Chinese doctors. Although the team reached out proactively via email, they were told, "There are no available operating theaters; they have already been booked by other countries."

Despite these challenges, the "Bright Journey" medical team persevered year after year, demonstrating to the people of Fiji the professionalism, meticulous patient care, strong sense of responsibility and exceptional technical expertise of Chinese doctors.

Today, many patients who regained their sight last year with the team's help have returned with anticipation to receive surgery on their other eye.

After ten years of medical aid to Fiji, Vanuatu and other South Pacific island nations, Professor Chen has distilled a replicable set of overseas medical aid practices that contribute to global health initiatives. She believes it is essential for recipient countries to truly experience advanced medical techniques and concepts. A clear understanding of the target country and mission is required during planning and preparation, and the team follows a comprehensive checklist to ensure all supplies are properly equipped.

Personnel selection is another key step. Professor Chen stresses choosing team members who can truly demonstrate professional competence and, once in Fiji, build friendships and deep emotional bonds with the local community—making overseas medical aid more meaningful.

After years of practice and refinement, the "Bright Journey" medical team has developed a relatively scientific and effective model for overseas medical aid. Professor Chen hopes these experiences can inspire peers, noting, "We want to show through our actions that Chinese doctors bring not only sight, but also friendship and hope."

援助斐济十年，广东眼科专家总结“可复制”的经验｜医援南太

十年前，中山大学中山眼科中心“光明行”团队开启了斐济医疗援助征程。近期，医疗队再次来到斐济首府苏瓦，为当地百姓带来光明。

中山眼科中心白内障科陈伟蓉教授有着多年援外医疗经验，她以扎实的医疗行动与深刻的管理智慧，总结出一套具有国际借鉴意义的援外医疗经验。

初到斐济时，当地居民对中国医生并不熟悉。团队主动发邮件沟通，却得到“没有手术室，已给别国预约”的回复。

面对重重困难，“光明行”团队通过一年又一年的坚持，将中国医生良好的精神风貌、对病人无微不至的态度、对手术认真负责的精神以及高超的医术，逐渐展现给斐济人民。

如今，许多患者去年在团队帮助下重见光明，今年又满怀期待地等候做另一只眼睛的手术。

十年援助斐济、瓦努阿图等南太平洋岛国，陈伟蓉总结出一套可复制的援外医疗经验，为推动全球健康事业发展贡献智慧。她认为，首先要让受援国家切实感受到先进的技术与理念。在思想和物资准备上，必须明确目标国家以及援助任务。团队会严格按照详细的物资准备表来配备物资。

人员选拔也是关键一环。陈伟蓉强调，要选拔真正能展示实力的队员，来到斐济后能与当地民众交朋友，建立深厚的感情，让援外医疗更具意义。

经过多年不断实践与改进，中山眼科中心“光明行”团队已形成一整套相对科学、行之有效的援外医疗模式。陈伟蓉表示，希望这些经验能为同行提供借鉴，“我们要用行动证明，中国医生不仅带来光明，更传递友谊与希望。”
