In 2017, the short-term medical aid program from Guangdong Province to Fiji was launched. This September, a new team of three doctors from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, including Chang Yunbing, Director of the Spine Surgery Department, Luo Songyuan, attending doctor of the Cardiology Department, and Wang Long, attending doctor of the Endocrinology Department, began a three-month technical assistance and training mission in Fiji.
Luo Songyuan explained that diabetes is a prevalent disease in Fiji, and coronary heart disease, ischaemic heart disease, and amputations triggered by diabetes are also relatively common. However, the diagnostic and treatment capabilities at local public hospitals in Fiji are very limited. Many patients with complex diseases can ultimately only be referred abroad for surgery, and with that comes high costs.

Despite many difficulties in the assistance work, the arrival of the Guangdong medical team has clearly improved the local medical services. Varanisese, Senior Medical Officer of Navua Hospital, said that, the hospital bears medical work for about 30,000 residents across three neighbouring provinces with only fewer than ten doctors;some of the more complex cases all need to be referred to hospitals in Suva and seen by specialists, but the process is very long and slow, so the Guangdong specialists there have greatly helped them.
"Patients in Fiji really like Chinese doctors. Every day during ward rounds, when patients see us, they warmly greet us," Wang Long said, "Chinese doctors have a good reputation locally. This reputation has been built through the selfless assistance of groups of Chinese doctors after another in Fiji."
The Head of the Radiology Department at Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH), who received training in China, returned home after completing her studies. She did not choose to take a higher-pay private hospital job but instead went back to the CWMH. CWMH Medical Superintendent Luke Nasedra said that they still have many young doctors studying at Chinese medical schools and returning to work after graduation. This is the result of medical cooperation between China and Fiji, and the real beneficiaries are the ordinary people of Fiji.
