Opinion|Start from Beijing again: women's power lights up shared future

From October 13th to 14th, the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women was held in Beijing. This marked China's hosting of another global conference on women after the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Three decades have passed, and what has changed are the opportunities and challenges facing women globally; what remains unchanged is the common pursuit of gender equality and the all-around development of women.

According to United Nations (UN) reports, more than 600 million women and girls worldwide remain mired in war and conflict; about 10% of women and girls are trapped in extreme poverty; the chronic maladies of violence and discrimination persist; and the gender digital divide is widening. China has not remained a mere spectator, but has adopted the "Spirit of Driving Nails" to break through these issues: China has won the largest critical battle against poverty in human history, with 690 million women entering a moderate prosperity in step; core indicators of maternal and child health rank among the top in middle- and upper-income countries; and women make up over 40% of the total workforce.

The cause of women has never been the concern of a single nation, but the common cause of all humankind. China is keenly aware of this and actively offers opportunities and safeguards for the global women's cause with its own development. China initiated the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, partners with UNESCO to create the Prize for Girls' and Women's Education, carries out a series of "small-yet-smart" pro bono programs such as the "health projects for women and children", and actively promotes international women's exchanges and cooperation under frameworks such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. All these efforts indicate that China's engagement in global governance on women's affairs has been unprecedented.

At this meeting, China announced a series of new initiatives for the next five years: it will further contribute $10 million to UN Women, allocate $100 million for the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, invite 50,000 women to China for exchanges and training, and establish a "Global Women's Capacity Building Center." Through these concrete actions, China will transform the concept of "building a community with a shared future for mankind" into a vivid practice that promotes the development of women's causes worldwide.
