What makes China's Greater Bay Area attractive to top global talent?

On August 20th, a global talent matchmaking event, under the theme "GBA's Appeal • Gathering Talent in Guangdong", was held in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). As a key part of the "Millions of Talents Gather in Guangdong" initiative, it attracted overseas PhD holders from top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, creating a direct channel between overseas talent and the GBA.

This event is the third session of the 2025 Summer Research Program for Master's and Doctoral Students, mainly targeting overseas students. Over 200 people registered (90% of whom were doctoral candidates), and 50 PhD holders were finally selected, including 25 from Oxford and 7 from Cambridge. Most of them are young scholars in academia or entrepreneurial talents, with research covering fields such as artificial intelligence and biomedicine. Dr. Chen Shunru from Cranfield University said that the development of Guangdong's low-altitude economy provides a broad stage for his artificial intelligence research.

During the study program, the PhD holders will visit districts such as Huangpu and Nansha in Guangzhou, tour companies including XPeng Motors, Akeso and research platforms such as The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), to learn about talent policies, and accumulate employment and entrepreneurial resources. Dr. ZhouDan Pan from Oxford, known for his appearance on the talent show "The Brain (China)", also brought his intelligent automated control technology project for collaboration, expressing that he was "instantly delighted" with Guangzhou.

To facilitate talent settlement, a doctoral talent fair will be held on August 22nd at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangdong) Talent Hub. Eighteen well-known enterprises and institutions will offer high-level positions such as postdoctoral fellows and research fellows. More than 90% of the positions require a doctoral degree, and over half offer annual salaries exceeding 500,000 yuan. The session will include in-depth discussions and the signing of letters of intent.
