The cycling events of the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympics (referred to as the "Paralympics and Special Olympics") concluded recently in Shenzhen. Competing on home soil, Guangdong's Wang Xiaomei swept six gold medals. A world-class para-cyclist, Wang is a Tokyo Paralympic silver-medallist and Paris Paralympic champion—her Paris gold was presented by renowned actor Jackie Chan.

On 17 July the Organising Committee for Paralympics and Special Olympics held a press briefing to showcase preparation highlights and achievements in China's disability-sport development. Wang Xiaomei attended and shared her story.

“I was born with oxygen deprivation,” she began. “My coordination has always been far below average; as a child I stumbled constantly. Watching other kids run and jump with ease, I felt deeply inferior—convinced I would never shake this clumsiness. Fortunately, my country never gave up on people with disabilities. The staff of the Disabled Persons' Federation have been like family, supporting and encouraging me every step of the way.”

Cycling training is brutal, yet she stuck it out.“Once I clip in, I'm on the track for four or five straight hours—my legs go numb, they don't even feel like mine. The indoor velodrome is banked; at speed your core has to be iron-stiff, and the slightest lapse can send you crashing. But when I fall, I get up, and keep riding. I know I have no extraordinary talent; all I can rely on is this stubborn, old-fashioned perseverance,” she said.

“Heaven may have closed one door, but I'll use a hundred times the effort to open another ,” she said. “I believe sweat never lies—every extra minute of training gives me one more minute of confidence. Effort is always rewarded.”

Speaking of her six golds at the Paralympics and Special Olympics in China, Wang said, “This Shenzhen competition was uniquely meaningful. The stands were filled with hometown spectators—Federation staff, relatives, friends, everyone who has ever helped me came to cheer.”

广东健将残特奥会放光彩 自行车运动员王小梅为广东拿下六金

日前，全国第十二届残疾人运动会暨第九届特殊奥林匹克运动会（下称残特奥会）自行车比赛在深圳结束，主场作战的广东运动员王小梅共斩获6枚金牌。王小梅是世界级残疾人自行车运动员，曾获得东京残奥会银牌和巴黎残奥会金牌。值得一提的是，她的巴黎残奥会金牌由著名演员成龙为她颁发。

7月17日上午，残特奥会组委会在广东大厦举行主题为“春天事业 活力绽放”的新闻发布会，重点介绍残特奥会筹备工作亮点和残疾人事业发展成果等。王小梅来到现场，分享了她的成长故事。

“我出生时因为缺氧，身体协调能力比常人差很多，小时候走路总跌跌撞撞，看着别的小朋友跑跳自如，我常感到自卑，总觉得自己这辈子都摆脱不了这种笨拙。幸运的是，国家从来没有放弃我们残疾人，残联的工作人员更是像亲人一样一直在帮助着我、鼓励着我。”王小梅说。

王小梅从小骨子里就有一股不服输的劲儿，从事自行车训练非常累，但她坚持了下来。“一上赛道就得连骑四五个小时，腿麻得像不是自己的，室内场地有坡度，高速骑行时核心得像块铁板，稍微松懈就可能摔车。但摔了就爬起来，擦点药继续练，我知道自己没什么过人天赋，能靠的只有坚持不懈这个笨办法。”王小梅说。

“老天爷关了一扇门，我就用百倍力气推开另一扇窗。”王小梅说，自己始终相信，汗水不会骗人，多练一分钟，就多一分底气，付出就一定有收获。

谈到在残特奥会上斩获六金时，她说：“这次在深圳的比赛，对我来说意义太特殊了。赛场周围都是家乡的观众，残联的工作人员、亲戚朋友、曾经帮助过我的人都来加油。”
