On July 14th, at Wanxia station on Shenzhen Metro Line 2, a penguin-like robot, fully stocked with commuters' favorite refreshment items, completed its debut delivery mission, bringing a tangibleand accessible experience of artificial intelligence to the Shenzhen public.

This marks the first global instance of a robot autonomously boarding a metro train to complete a delivery. The project blends rail transit and robot delivery, jointly operated by Shenzhen Metro Group and Vanke. Once a 7‑Eleven convenience store places an order via a dedicated app, staff pack the items. The robot then plans an optimal route, boards the subway, and independently delivers the goods to the designated store, brimming with a high‑tech vibe and a sense of the future.

This scenario unfolding in Shenzhen is no coincidence. Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows the city produces about 20% of China's industrial robot output and approximately 60% of the world's service robot production capacity. Shenzhen has also created the most diverse range of robot applications worldwide, from BYD production lines and hospital diagnostics to street patrolsand many other scenarios. Shenzhen Metro's introduction of delivery robots this time allows more Shenzhen residents to experience the charms of the tech‑forward city in their everyday routines.
