On February 14th, the ice hockey competition at the 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025 concluded, with the Chinese women's ice hockey team losing 1-8 to Japan, ultimately securing the bronze medal with a record of 1 win and 2 losses. Ten players from Guangdong were part of the team, all affiliated with the Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star Club. This marks Guangdong's first medal at the Asian Winter Games.

Among the ten athletes, some are experienced like Yu Baiwei, who competed at the Beijing Winter Olympics. There are also emerging talents such as Wang Jiaxin and Qu Le, who made a mark in the Milan Winter Olympic qualifiers. The team finished the qualifiers for the Milan Winter Olympics on February 9th before participating in the Asian Winter Games. Although China didn't secure a spot to compete in the Milan Winter Olympics, former captain Yu Baiwei scored in the competition against Japan.

In the three matches at the 9th Asian Winter Games, Guangdong athletes performed outstandingly. In the first game against the Republic of Korea, Fang Xin scored the first goal, with assists from Wang Jiaxin and Kong Minghui. In the second game against Kazakhstan, Qu Le assisted and Wang Jiaxin scored. In the third game against Japan, Yu Baiwei scored, and Kong Minghui assisted.

Despite Guangdong's limited ice and snow resources, there are still many talents cultivated, thanks to the Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star Club's development programs. Established in 2017, the club has supported the women's national ice hockey team and contributed to its growth. In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, 16 players from the Chinese women's ice hockey team were from this club. At this year's Asian Winter Games, the Chinese men's ice hockey team finished fourth, with four players also from the club.

The club not only develops talent but also promotes ice hockey in Southern China. The national team trains and competes in Shenzhen, boosting ice hockey as a local sport. Zhou Song, a coach, has guided 60-70 local children from Guangdong to participate in the 3rd Revitalization Cup Shenyang Youth Ice Hockey Tournament, covering age groups from U6 to U14.

Since the Beijing Winter Olympics, ice hockey has gained more popularity, and attracted more people to engage. Many kindergartens, primary and secondary schools are eager to collaborate on providing experience sessions. Many clubs have also established a comprehensive training system. However, growing from a beginner to a professional athlete-to-be requires the child's commitment, talent, hard work, and family support. Zhou Song is optimistic that with the growing market, ice hockey in Southern China will see better development in the future.
