The press conference for the 2024 Understanding China Conference (Guangzhou) was held in Beijing on November 27. The conference, themed "Carry Through the Reform to the End——Chinese Modernization and New Opportunities for World Development," will convene global political leaders, scholars, industry pioneers, and representatives of international organizations at the Guangzhou Yuexiu International Conference Center.
Discussions will delve into the significant role of Chinese modernization in advancing global modernization processes and its global implications. The conference also aims to highlight the distinct features, practical pathways, and dynamic aspects of Chinese modernization, injecting Chinese wisdom and vitality into a world grappling with turbulence and transformation.
Spanning three days, the event will feature opening and keynote sessions, plenary speeches and guest dialogues, six parallel seminars, fourteen thematic forums, two closed-door discussions and a series of auxiliary activities.
Key Features and Significance
Xu Weixin, President of the China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy (CIIDS) and former Vice President of the Central Party School highlighted three major aspects of this year's conference agenda:
1.Promoting the Global Significance of Chinese Modernization: Explaining the implications of China’s ongoing reforms and modernization efforts for the global landscape.
2.Showcasing the Characteristics and Achievements of Chinese Modernization: Demonstrating how comprehensive reform invigorates global development.
3.Fostering Civilizational Exchanges: Highlighting the excellence of Chinese traditional culture and the advantages and prospects of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a model of Chinese modernization.
Xu remarked, "Amid a turbulent global landscape, China remains steadfast as a stabilizing force. This conference actively addresses global challenges and proposes actionable solutions. Through the lens of civilizational exchange, we hope to showcase China's wisdom and responsibility in promoting harmony and mutual understanding, enabling the world to better understand China, the Communist Party of China, and the essence of Chinese modernization."
Participants and Growing Global Influence
To date, 100 representatives from the international community and Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, have confirmed attendance. This includes nine former heads of state or government, 16 ministerial-level officials, and two foreign envoys to China. Over 200 Chinese guests are also set to participate and share their ideas in the forums, with the total attendance expected to reach approximately 600.
The significant increase in foreign attendees reflects the growing global influence of the Understanding China Conference. It also underscores the international community's strong interest in using this platform to engage in dialogue, exchange ideas, and build consensus.
