On November 25th, the Huangmaohai Sea-Crossing Passage successfully passed its acceptance inspection, signaling the imminent opening of this key national project in December. Following 18 months of preparation and four years of intensive construction, the passage will become another vital maritime route in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), after the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.
The Huangmaohai Sea-Crossing Passage is the first sea-crossing project launched after the release of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and a major project under China's 13th Five-Year Plan. Spanning approximately 31 kilometers, it connects the Hezhou–Gaolan Port Expressway in the east to the Xinhui-Taishan Expressway in the west, where it also intersects with the West Coastal Expressway. The project includes two main bridges: Gaolan Port Bridge and Huangmaohai Bridge. The latter, featuring a triple-tower cable-stayed design, will become the largest triple-tower cable-stayed bridge for road traffic in the world upon completion.
According to Zhu Chao, Director of the Management Center of Huangmaohai Passage, the project achieved multiple technological innovations during its construction. These include the "slim-waist" concrete cable tower design, TY-shaped pier structure, and an integrated vibration and energy dissipation system for the triple-tower cable-stayed bridge. These advancements enhance wind resistance and durability while contributing valuable expertise to the high-quality development of large-scale bridges in Guangdong.
Following inspection, the passage requires final approval from the relevant authorities before opening. Once operational, it will address the limited transportation options between the western coastal areas of Guangdong and the GBA's core regions. The project is expected to extend the GBA's economic influence westward and along coastal regions, driving coordinated development of the regional economy.
