The first sub-forum of the 2024 Greater Bay Area Science Forum, centered on big science projects and international cooperation, was held on November 15th at Guangzhou's Bio International Island. The event brought together over 200 participants, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and leading experts from nearly 20 countries. They conducted in-depth discussions around the theme of "International Cooperation and Win-Win Future in the Era of Big Science".

He Fuchu is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and initiator of the international big science program on the Proteomic Navigator of the Human Body (hereinafter referred to as "π-HuB Project"). He stated that the forum would advance the scientific progress of the π-HuB Project and foster domestic and international collaboration. He highlighted the project's potential to "uncover the keys to life activities and assume a new mission in leading life sciences and human health."

Robert Moritz, chair of the nomination committee for the π-HuB Project, emphasized that the initiative is not just a Chinese national project but also a global platform attracting top-tier talent. Ruedi Aebersold, a professor at ETH Zurich, noted in his keynote speech that the project represents a significant breakthrough following the Human Genome Project, enhancing the understanding of life's foundations. He suggested that life sciences could revolutionize biomedicine, aid in building more accurate disease prediction models, and improve human quality of life.

Academician Gu Dongfeng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences shared achievements in global cooperation on research of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. He underscored that integrating genetic samples worldwide could help reduce cardiovascular disease risks and translate genetic insights into clinical health data.

Professor Uwe Völker from the University of Greifswald highlighted that studying proteomes could deepen understanding of disease mechanisms, noting that big science projects require substantial funding, time, and governmental support. He expressed confidence in the program's vast potential.

Participating scientists agreed that proteomics serves as the "key" to interpreting genomics, which is critical to overcoming major diseases. They called for multidisciplinary integration and the application of cutting-edge technologies to unlock new opportunities in proteomics research and advance the realization of intelligent medicine.
