On November 2nd, reporters from leading Indonesian media continued their tour of Guangzhou. In the morning, they visited the headquarters of Pony.ai in Nansha District, experiencing an autonomous taxi ride. In the afternoon, they explored the historic Yong Qing Fang neighborhood and took in panoramic views of Guangzhou from the Ferris wheel atop Canton Tower.
Founded in 2016, Pony.ai provides autonomous driving technology and solutions for global markets, focusing on Robotaxi services, Robotrucks, and Personally Owned Vehicles (POV) with intelligent driving capabilities. This makes it a frontrunner in the autonomous driving field.
Upon arriving at Pony.ai's headquarters in Nansha, the Indonesian reporters eagerly boarded the autonomous taxis. After securing their seatbelts in the back seat, they selected their destinations on a touchscreen in front of them. The vehicle smoothly planned its route and began the journey.
"It's so cool!" exclaimed both Descafrom Indonesia's Antara and Winda from Liputan6. "I've only seen autonomous taxis on TikTok, so riding in one today was thrilling," said Desca. "It's incredibly comfortable inside the car as well."
Ricky from Kumparan noted that he felt a bit apprehensive at first but found his nervousness quickly fading as the car drove steadily for over ten minutes. "It actually felt smoother than a regular taxi," he added.
For Indonesians, autonomous driving is a new concept, and safety is a top concern. A representative from Pony.ai explained that the company currently operates around 300 autonomous vehicles across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, all of which have demonstrated high safety standards.
Neli from Kompas remarked that a Chinese company had previously demonstrated autonomous driving in Jakarta, and she expressed hope that more Chinese autonomous driving companies would enter the Indonesian market to enhance transport efficiency.
In the afternoon, the reporters visited Yong Qing Fang, a revitalized area of Guangzhou's old town. The blend of tradition and modernity left a strong impression, with reporters frequently pausing to take photos. No visit to Yong Qing Fang would be complete without a stop at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum. The museum's exquisite opera costumes and live Cantonese opera performances fascinated the reporters. "I never knew China had so many unique opera styles,” one reporter noted.
Leaving the historic streets, the reporters headed to Guangzhou's iconic Canton Tower, a symbol of modernity. From the 450-meter-high outdoor observation deck, they boarded the world's highest Ferris wheel to enjoy Guangzhou's stunning nighttime views.
Neli from Kompas compared Guangzhou's lively streets to Jakarta, saying, "Jakarta is also vibrant, but Guangzhou is very clean, with lots of people yet never feeling overcrowded." Ricky from Kumparan added, "Guangzhou is a city where traditional culture and modern charm blend seamlessly. It's an impressive combination!"
