On December 17th, the final round of the 2nd“Yunshan Cup”International Remote Interpreting Contest was successfully concluded. The contest was initiated by Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and organized by the Guangdong Translation and Interpretation Base for International Communication. A total of 216 participants from Chinese and foreign universities competed at a high level in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting on a remote interpreting platform. Under the theme of “Cultural exchanges and mutual learning, a better future of the world”, competitors narrated China’s stories in 14 foreign languages, aiming to enhance the global understanding of China’s perspectives and solutions and foster cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between China and the outside world.

Emphasizing the Exchange of Human Civilizations, the Contest Highlighted Youth's Global Role

Divided into 14 foreign language categories including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Malay, Lao, Burmese and Khmer, the contest attracted over 4,000 participants from prestigious Chinese and international schools such as the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in the US, University of Leeds in the UK, Moscow State University in Russia, Toulouse Institute of Political Studies in France, Seoul National University in South Korea, Hanoi University in Vietnam, and Bangkok University in Thailand. Domestically, participants were from Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. After preliminary and semifinal rounds, a total of 216 interpreters from around the globe advanced to the final round.

Professor Liu Haichun, member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, stated that through interpreting, young people can spread excellent Chinese culture to five continents while playing a unique role as cultural ambassadors. They serve as vital bridges for disseminating Chinese culture overseas and facilitating exchange and mutual understanding between civilizations.

The Contest Followed Language Industry Trends and Advanced Innovative Talent Development in International Communication

Xing Yutang, Vice President of the CICG Academy of Translation and Interpretation (ATI) and Vice Secretary-General of Translators Association of China (TAC), pointed out that interpreters bear significant responsibilities in global outreach and spreading Chinese culture worldwide. Excellent interpreters facilitate cross-cultural communication through language.

For this contest, six senior experts in international communication from the United Nations Staff Recreation Council Chinese Book Club, China Central Television, and overseas Confucius Institutes were invited as keynote speakers. Professor Li Zhengren, former Chief of Interpretation Service, United Nations Office at Geneva, served as the thematic report expert to evaluate participants’ remote interpreting abilities. Professor Liu Jianda, Vice President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, noted that as an international remote interpreting platform, this competition not only represented digital innovation in translation education but also aligned with cutting-edge language service industry trends. It helped bridge the gap between universities and the industry. The contest also functioned as an assessment of multilingual interpreting education quality at Chinese and foreign institutions, contributing to translation teaching. Collectively, these efforts further international cultural exchange and boost China’s global communication capabilities.

Several foreign participants noted that the contest facilitated exchanges and dialogues among youth from different nations, allowing mutual learning and a deeper understanding of China. Ms. Jenny Fearnside-Bitsios, President of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), emphasized the role of translation as a bridge for the exchange of human civilizations amid today’s multicultural integration. AIIC congratulated the event and expressed interest in deeper cooperation with Chinese institutions to cultivate more world-class international interpreters. This would enhance provision of high-quality multilingual interpreting services globally.

共讲中国故事！第二届“云山杯”国际远程口译大赛总决赛落幕

12月17日，第二届“云山杯”国际远程口译大赛总决赛圆满落幕。大赛由广东外语外贸大学首创，广东对外传播翻译基地承办。来自海内外高校的216名选手在远程口译平台完成交替传译和同声传译高水平竞技，以“文明互鉴·更美好的世界图景”为主题，用14种外语讲述中国故事，让世界更加了解中国理念和中国方案，推动中外文明交流、民心相通。

聚焦人类文明互鉴，展现青年时代担当

大赛共设置英、法、德、西、俄、日、韩、越、泰、印、马、老、缅、柬14个外语语种，以真实远程口译工作平台为依托，共吸引来自美国蒙特雷国际研究院、英国利兹大学、俄罗斯莫斯科大学、法国图卢兹政治学院、韩国首尔国立大学、越南河内大学、泰国曼谷大学、北京大学、北京外国语大学、上海外国语大学、广东外语外贸大学等国内外知名院校4000多名选手报名。经过初赛、复赛遴选，全球共有216名选手成功晋级总决赛。

广东外语外贸大学党委常委、副校长刘海春教授提出，本次大赛让世界青年通过翻译将中华民族的优秀文化远播于五洲四海，让他们发挥独特而重要的桥梁纽带作用，成为中华文化海外传播、人类文明交流互鉴的使者。

创新国际传播人才培养

中国外文局翻译院副院长、中国翻译协会副秘书长邢玉堂指出，口译人员在对外交流和国际传播工作中承担着重大的责任，优秀的口译人员在语言和文化方面架起沟通的桥梁。

本次大赛邀请来自联合国中国书会等6位国际传播领域资深专家担任主旨发言嘉宾，联合国日内瓦办事处前会议管理司口译部门负责人李正仁教授担任主题报告专家，考察选手远程口译能力。

广东外语外贸大学副校长刘建达教授提到，本次大赛以国际远程口译为媒介，既是一次翻译教育数字化创新，是走出象牙塔与语言服务行业前沿趋势的对接，也是一次对国内外多语言口译教育质量的评测，反哺翻译教学。共同促进国际文化交流，共同推进中国国际传播能力提升。

讲好中国故事，不但需要中国话语、中国视角，也需要民间、个人特别是具有中文学习经历的外语讲述者，从个体视角、情感维度进行个性化表达。多位外籍选手提到大赛促进了各国青年交流对话，相互学习，让大家更好地了解中国。国际会议口译员协会(AIIC)主席珍妮·弗恩赛德提到，在多元文化交融的今天，翻译是人类文明互鉴的桥梁，高水平的翻译人才能够打破语言的隔阂，有助于国际社会凝聚共识。
