During the period of rapid development in Shenzhen, a considerable number of migrant workers have flocked to Xixiang. The Xixiang Overpass is conveniently situated near the largest agricultural wholesale market in Bao'an District, leading to a substantial demand for haircuts due to the high foot traffic. As the saying goes, where there are people, there is business. As a result, more than a dozen to twenty barbers regularly gather here, setting up stalls to provide haircuts, with prices typically fixed at 10 yuan each. This has given rise to the vibrant phenomenon known as "Ten Yuan Haircut Street".

This street isn't long, with barber stalls neatly arranged in a row: each stall features two chairs, a square mirror on one side, and a chair for the customer to sit in. Along the adjacent fence, you'll find a variety of colorful barber capes hanging, and all the barber tools neatly fit into a small box. Their services are straightforward – they exclusively offer haircuts, without any hair washing, and hair coloring options are limited to black. It's a minimalist setup to the extent that sometimes all they require are scissors and clippers. Throughout the haircut process, there's no mention of membership cards or any sales pitches. From the moment a customer takes a seat to complete the payment after the haircut, it can be completed in as little as 5 minutes.

The majority of these street-side barbers begin setting up their stalls at around 6 o'clock in the morning. Throughout the day, they depend on small signs and vocal calls to draw in customers. As the evening falls, each of these small stalls illuminates a small lamp, creating a picturesque scene that stretches along the street. They only begin the process of gradually closing their stalls around 10 o'clock at night.

Xiao Li, a food delivery driver, has been a loyal patron of these street-side barber stalls for over four years. He noted that most of the nearby food delivery drivers and couriers are frequent visitors to these stalls. He commented, "Getting a haircut here for 10 yuan isn't much different from spending 35 yuan at a traditional barbershop."

On the "Ten Yuan Haircut Street", you can find a diverse group of barbers. Some are seasoned haircutters in their fifties and sixties, while others are younger individuals. Wang Qing, a 34-year-old, began providing haircuts at Xixiang Overpass in July of this year. Before coming to Shenzhen, he had made two unsuccessful attempts to open barbershops. However, upon arriving in Shenzhen, Wang Qing decided to return to his former profession as a barber.

When Wang Qing initially started his stall for haircuts, he faced a lack of customers. He remembers, "By eight or nine in the evening, I would only earn a few dozen yuan, and I felt really anxious. However, as time went on and I built a group of regular customers, things began to improve gradually. Now, I can make a few hundred yuan a day, and it brings me peace of mind."

Establishing a loyal customer base is the core of these street-side barbers' business strategy. When most customers step into this street, they naturally gravitate toward the barber they know and trust. In Shenzhen, individuals in various roles share a sense of solidarity and mutual respect within the working class.

Du Juan, a 52-year-old female haircutter, stands out among the male barbers. In 2019, when her daughter graduated from college and decided to work in Shenzhen, Du Juan also relocated to Xixiang. It was during a routine grocery shopping trip that she happened to pass by "Ten Yuan Haircut Street," sparking the idea to return to her former profession.

Prior to her arrival in Xixiang, Du Juan had either been working in her hometown in Hubei or managing her own barbershop in the northern regions. She has developed a fondness for Shenzhen, and after years of operating her stall, the thought of returning home hasn't crossed her mind. She explains, "In Shenzhen, as long as you work hard, you can make a living. The people here are pleasant, well-educated, and welcoming. Otherwise, I wouldn't have remained here for so many years."
