Director's Notes:

After long years, I finally got a chance to film my own story in Hong Kong. During these months, I have spent most of my time and efforts on this short film, hoping to present it at its best. But since I had not been to Hong Kong for a long time, I had to build a team and deal with application procedures from scratch. The high prices there also forced us to be more careful in the preliminary planning, while we had to change or adjust most of our familiar shooting methods.

My short film "Migratory Bird" has the element of a "journey", so we had to find the very scene that fits the state of the characters for the plot setting. From the New Territories to the Kowloon Peninsula, and the Outlying Islands, we have almost travelled all over Hong Kong at the location scouting stage. Most of the places, suitable as we thought they would be, are closed to the public, so we had to find other ones to replace them while adjusting the script and the shooting scheme, which resulted in the retarded progress of the whole crew. I then realized my lack of coordination ability.

When we finally got to the shooting stage, the weather refused to cooperate. It was inconsistent with the atmosphere of the plot. Therefore, we adjusted some of the plot design so that the overall emotions of the film could echo the tone of the environment.

Fortunately, the shooting went off without a hitch. Although I had to make a lot of adjustments to the set, the whole team worked together to complete the task. To give more room for the post-producer to play, we have also done a lot of impromptu shootings and captured quite a few unexpected scenes. Hopefully, we can create more surprising content at the next stages.

时隔多年,我终于有机会重新回到香港拍摄关于自己的故事。这几个月期间,我将大部分的时间和精力都放在了这部短片创作上,希望能够呈现出它最好的样子。也是因为太久没有回到香港拍摄,我需要重新了解团队搭建、申请手续等事项,高昂的物价也让我们在前期统筹时不得不更加小心翼翼地规划。许多以往熟悉的拍摄方式也不得不进行转换也调整。

我的短片《家庭旅行》中有“旅程”的属性,我们必须找到符合影片中人物状态的场景进行情节设定。从新界到九龙再到离岛,我们在前期勘景阶段跑遍了香港。而且许多地方并非公共场所,而属私人或团体所有,因此,原本觉得合适的地方不得不重新寻找替代,剧本和拍摄方案也需要调整,这也使得整个剧组前期的进度略显缓慢,我也意识到自己统筹能力的不足。

而进入拍摄阶段后,天公不作美。拍摄几天的天气上不太符合剧情中的感觉,为此我们也调整了剧情的一些设计,让影片的整体情绪和拍摄的环境基调达成统一。

万幸的是,拍摄整体上顺利。虽然我在现场做出不少调整,但是整个团队齐心协力完成了创作。为了给予后期更大的空间,我们在原本的分镜之外也拍摄了大量的即兴镜头,捕捉到了许多意想不到的内容,希望接下来的后期阶段能够玩出花样吧。
