This summer, the "museum fever" is reaching its climax.
According to the data released by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, in the first half of 2023, the province received 328 million visitors, up 41% year-on-year. With the full recovery of cultural tourism, museums have become the "first stops" for many non-local tourists.
It is reported that the total number of visitors to the Guangdong Museum in July reached 322,009, increased by 56.2% compared with the same period in 2019. Cultural venues such as Nanyue King Museum, Guangzhou Museum, Guangdong Folk Arts Museum and the Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-Sen's Mansion also saw a peak during the summer holiday. As of August 9th, the number of visitors to the Guangzhou Museum during the summer holiday had exceeded 140,000, several times that of the same period in previous years.
The surge in visitors has resulted in an extremely high demand for museum tickets. To make up for the "shortage of tickets", many museums in Guangdong have made flexible adjustments to their opening hours. To create an unforgettable experience for the visitors, they have also launched a number of special activities in summer.
During Guangdong Museum's extended opening hours on Friday nights, the five permanent exhibitions are available as usual. In addition to that, an exclusive ticket package for special exhibitions "Splendor: Art in the Age of Victoria" and "An Exhibition of Antiquities from Ancient Syria" were launched for the first time during the extended hours on summer Friday nights. On the evening of July 21st, the "Summer Adventure Dancing Party" has brushed up the experience of the visitors to the exhibitions: Dressed in Victorian-style clothes, figures in the paintings – ladies holding peonies, boys playing the flutes, as well as violinists and florists – all were dancing to the music elegantly with the audiences in the museum lobby.
Joining hands with China Hotel, Guangzhou Museum has also held the 2023 Mid-Autumn Mooncake Tasting Event at the Zhenhai Tower, unveiling the exhibition series of "Disappearing Mooncakes" to the public through the cultural fashion show and the on-site mooncake tasting.
In addition, a camping activity will also be held at the Zhenhai Tower of Guangzhou Museum on the night of the Chinese Valentine's Day, allowing the visitors to start a "star-gazing tour" with the "viewing mirror" of Qing Dynasty in the museum collections.
A series of "Midsummer Night at the Generalissimo Mansion" summer activities were also held at the Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-Sen's Mansion, including outdoor concerts, "water gun battles", "magic bubbles" and other colorful activities.
There are also a variety of study tour activities, such as the "Fun Holiday in Guangzhou" series hosted by Guangzhou Museum, which includes activities like handicrafts making, red destinations touring, role-playing and ancient buildings exploring.
During August, intangible cultural heritage research courses provided by Nanyue King Museum are open to the public for reservation every weekend, with different topics including Foshan's stone art, Guangzhou's paper cutting, Xiguan's bronze casting and olive carving.
While the series lectures of"Exploration of Blue Civilization – Maritime Archaeology" by Wei Jun, professor and doctoral supervisor from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology of Fudan University, were hosted by Guangzhou Maritime Museum during the summer holiday, aiming to usher the audiences into the world of maritime archaeology, which has received a warm welcome.
