Eminent painter Liu Guoyu settles in Wenyuan of northern Guangdong where he enjoys lush Weng mountains and lucid Weng water, devoting himself to studying and creating Burnt Ink landscapes, and self-funds the Wengshan Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Institute—the largest non-profit art institution in Lingnan. Liu Guoyu has risen to prominence in the global art circle for poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He thinks literature and calligraphy can endow Chinese paintings with the soul. Therefore, painters who come to study and exchange in the Institute are required to practice both painting calligraphy as well as learning about poetry. Inspired by Liu, more and more painters, poets, and photographers have gathered at the institute, yielding bumper results from creations and exchanges. And thus the “Weng Mountain phenomenon” has become popular. #artandculture
