The 2022 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Drone Competition concluded on May 27th in Luohu District, Shenzhen, where drone soccer games, 360-degree aircrafts, and more were on display.
Themed "Dreaming the Future of the GBA with Science and Technology Innovation", the event is a high-level, specialized science and technology competition designed for young people in the GBA, which has lasted six months since its launch on December 10th, 2022, including six regional competitions held in Shenzhen, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, with more than 2,000 participants from over 300 teams in cities of the Greater Bay Area to showcase one after another game of "Fast & Furious" on the sky for the audience.
On the morning of its close, the final competition of drone soccer teams, featuring outstanding teams selected from the regional competitions, took place with the top three ones competing against each other. Under the control of the players, the spherical drones chased and dribbled the ball into the goal, making the match intense. In addition, there were 11 technology experience projects on-site, including three-model assembly, remote-control operation and 360-degree aircraft, allowing students to experience the fun of technology while watching the competition.
Chen Yalin, a student from the Macau Anglican College and also a contestant, said that she used to consider drones as just filming devices without the expectation that they could be used in so many interactive competitions, even to explore caves without network coverage by the joystick control. Chen and her teammates benefited a lot from the competition, and she hopes to add more competitive projects to their daily training when she returns.
According to reports, this year's event included six competitions, including a popular science quiz about drone aviation, a drone creative painting competition, a drone 3D printing model competition, a drone first-person view race, a drone third-person view race, and a drone soccer team competition, among which a total of 1,303 student prizes were awarded, as well as 20 outstanding instructors and 20 outstanding organizing units.
The event promoted extensive communication, comprehensive exchange, and deep integration among young people in the Greater Bay Area, promoting the development of science and technology literacy and innovation capabilities of the GBA young ones and further enhancing their sense of belonging to China, according to Chiu Duncan, a member of The Technology and Innovation Functional Constituency for the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and chairman of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation.
Various performances for the closing event like drone flights and aeromodelling flights are offered on-site. For example, drones flew through obstacles depicting 11 landmarks from the cities of the GBA. And two biomimetic models of "Phoenix", made of new ultra-fiber materials with a length of about 7 meters and a wingspan of about 5 meters, flew into Shenzhen's sky for the first time with beautiful music and rising colorful smoke.
