A 30-year-old man from Chengdu, who goes by the pseudonym "Nan Duoduo", has recently gained attention for his feat of climbing China's five great mountains in just five days over the May Day holiday.
The five mountains are Mount Tai in East China, the Hengshan Mountain in South China, the Huashan Mountain in West China, the Hengshan Mountain in North China and the Songshan Mountain in Central China.
Nan Duoduo, who enjoys traveling during his free time, planned the trip to see more of China's natural beauty. He spent months preparing for the journey, carefully evaluating his physical ability and creating a detailed itinerary.
Nan Duoduo, who is 30 years old this year, works in Chengdu. He enjoys traveling in his spare time, and whenever he has no other commitments, he would go on a trip during the holidays. Earlier this year, he traveled to Tibet and Jiangsu.
As early as the beginning of April, Nan Duoduo had started planning a five-day mountain climbing trip. "As this trip is challenging in all aspects, it must be planned," Nan Duoduo said. Sometimes, he would go on an impromptu trip, but this five-day journey to climb the five mountains was only confirmed after evaluating his own abilities and detailed planning.
Starting with the Hengshan Mountain in Hunan, Nan Duoduo then climbed the Songshan Mountain in Henan, Mount Tai in Shandong, and finished his trip with the Hengshan Mountain in Shanxi and the Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi. Later on, he checked the train, bus, and subway timetables in various places and devised a detailed itinerary. "I went to Huashan Mountain ten years ago, and if I had to climb the five great mountains in five days back then, it would have been quite difficult. The developed transportation network in China today supported my journey," said Nan Duoduo.
After sharing his accomplishment on social media, Nan Duoduo received both praise and skepticism from netizens. He shared screenshots from his fitness tracking app and plans to post videos from his journey to prove its authenticity.
He saved on expenses by taking overnight trains and sleeping in hard seats. Nan Duoduo spent just over 4000 yuan on the entire trip, opting for low-cost travel options and sleeping on trains to save on accommodations.
Nan Duoduo said that he usually exercises twice a week, has run a half marathon, and during the five-day mountain climbing journey, he averaged over 30,000 steps on WeChat each day. Apart from some slight soreness in his feet, he did not feel any discomfort. Nevertheless, he advised netizens not to blindly imitate his journey, as his "five-day climb of the five great mountains" itinerary started from Chengdu and may not apply to other cities. He encouraged others to plan and evaluate their own physical abilities before attempting such a trip.
When asked about his future travel plans, Nan Duoduo told reporters that he has three goals: the first one is to travel around Sichuan Province, which he has accomplished; the second one is to travel around China, and he is close to achieving it. The third goal is to travel around the world. "After traveling across China, I will explore other countries. Anyway, I want to see all the beautiful mountains and rivers in my homeland first," he said.
