The Consulate General of Royal Danish Consulate General in Guangzhou and the Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (GPAFFC) jointly organized the "Guangdong-Denmark Friendship Ride" green cycling event on the Ersha Island on May 5th. About 60 representatives from foreign consulates and PAFFC member groups participated in the event.
Soren Bindesboll, the Consul General of Denmark in Guangzhou, said, "Cycling is suitable for everyone. It can bridge divides and bring people together. As an enjoyable activity, it provides a physical workout, refreshes the mind from the pressures of work, and allows people to become more attuned to their surroundings. Moreover, cycling can contribute to reducing carbon emissions."
As a cycling enthusiast, Bindesboll is impressed by the changes that Guangzhou has made for cyclists. " I commute and take my kids to school by bike every day. The road traffic here is very safe, and there are many facilities available for cyclists, which makes cycling even more convenient." He hopes that the event will promote cycling in Guangzhou.
Liu Chenzi, the President of GPAFFC, said that major cities in China, including Guangzhou, have opened up more bike lanes to provide better infrastructure for green and low-carbon living. It is hoped that both domestic and international friends can enjoy the beauty and convenience of cycling and life in this floral city of Guangzhou. She also called on everyone to take this event as an opportunity to make low-carbon emission and green travel a part of their daily lives, and to work together to contribute to achieving the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Li Wei, the Director of the ITDP Bicycle Project, said at the event that there are currently 400,000 shared bicycles in use in Guangzhou. "Guangzhou is committed to building a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city and creating an attractive pedestrian transportation network."
According to public information released by the Guangzhou Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau, Guangzhou plans to achieve the "6080" passenger transport target in the city by 2035, based on the construction of approximately 2,000 kilometers of urban rail transit. The city also aims to become a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city by creating an attractive pedestrian transportation network, and promoting walking and cycling as modes of transportation, with the goal of shaping over 50% of daily-life road space for pedestrians and cyclists.
