During this year's May Day holiday, various cultural and historical venues in Guangzhou have integrated their collections and organized nearly a hundred exhibitions and experiential activities, attracting a large number of visitors.
As of May 2nd, which marks the fourth day of the holiday, how many of these museum activities have you engaged in?
Unusual night at the museum: midnight visit to the Guangzhou Museum
Among the many exciting museum activities during this year's May Day holiday, the Guangzhou Museum's "Midnight Visit to the Guangzhou Museum" live-streaming event stood out with its creativity, attracting 40,000 viewers to watch the midnight spectacle online.
On April 30th at 22:30, the Guangzhou Museum was still brightly lit. After its usual closing time, a host entered the museum and gently knocked on the vermilion gate of "Zhongyuan Building" on Yuexiu Mountain, waiting for the arrival of its owner, "Mr. Yao". Led by the host and "
Mr. Yao", the audience had a rare opportunity to experience a museum tour at night.
Mr. Yao took the audience to appreciate various cultural relics, including the "big-eyed chicken", the main means of transportation for early overseas Chinese immigrants from Guangdong, the carved wooden eaves showing the "North Bank Guangzhou Pearl River" from the Qing Dynasty, and the hollowed-out blue and white landscape three-legged plate from the early Qing Dynasty.
According to the curator of the Guangzhou Museum, the audience's "night tour of Guangzhou Museum" offers not only a chance to appreciate cultural relics but also a rare opportunity to learn about the cultural stories behind them. Such activities have also made the Guangzhou Museum a popular night-time tourist destination in Guangzhou.
Exhibition at the Guangzhou Maritime Museum showcases Xinjiang cultural treasures
This year's May Day holiday saw the Guangzhou Maritime Museum in the Huangpu district become a popular destination for visitors. The museum's "Westward through the Yang Pass - Xinjiang Cultural Treasures Exhibition", which opened to the public on April 29th, boasts a wide range of fascinating artifacts.
The exhibition, jointly presented by the Guangzhou Maritime Museum and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum , brings together 136 exquisite cultural relics from various regions of Xinjiang from the pre-Qin to the Song and Yuan periods (Before BC 221 – AD 1368 ). It showcases the flourishing and magnificent cultural exchanges between the Western Region and the Central Plains over the past millennium.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: "Origins of the Silk Road", "Flourishing of the Silk Road", and " Buddhist Art of the Silk Road". It presents silk and wool textiles, precious documents in multiple ethnic languages, stunning sculptures and murals, luxurious jewelry made of gold, silver, and jade, colored pottery, bronze, and other national treasures from Xinjiang. Each artifact tells the fascinating stories of the Silk Road to the audience.
One exhibit worth noting is the replica of the "Five Stars Rising in the East Favor China " embroidered armguard. According to the introduction, the armguard was discovered in a tomb at the Niya ruins in Xinjiang. The embroidery pattern uses a mountain-shaped cloud as the foundation, extending along the weft of the fabric. From the right, there are two birds, a unicorn, and a tiger, accompanied by the inscription "Five Stars Rising in the East Favor China ", with two dot patterns next to the inscription representing the two stars in the five stars.
In terms of craftsmanship, there are 220 warps and 48 wefts in each square centimeter of the brocade . The entire pattern does not have color blocks and is woven in blue, green, red, yellow, and white, with the five stars pattern represented by these five colors. This exhibit is a replica by the China National Silk Museum .
The exhibition will run until October 29th of this year.
