Mangrove forests are natural coastal barriers. Growing along shorelines, they help reduce the impact of waves, prevent coastal erosion and protect nearby communities. In Guangdong, existing mangrove forests help avert more than RMB 280 million in economic losses caused by coastal erosion each year, while helping safeguard nearly 10 million coastal residents. Recently, Guangdong released a dedicated plan for mangrove wetland conservation. By 2030, the province aims to maintain its mangrove area at more than 13,700 hectares, further establishing these coastal ecosystems as a defining feature of Green and Beautiful Guangdong.
