【大美广东】A Dragon Made of Rice: A Hakka Harvest Tradition in Heyuan
春秋有"龙"稻谷满仓,东源农户晒谷场铺巨龙
Art and Culture | In Shangguan, Heyuan, a local Hakka Dragon-Chasing tradition, recognized as a provincial-level item of intangible cultural heritage, takes on a distinctive form. On October 18, during the autumn harvest season and around the time of the Double Ninth Festival, tradition meets creativity. Chen Lige, a bearer of this tradition, leads villagers in arranging grains of rice into the shape of a giant dragon on a rice-drying ground. In spring, a torch-lit dragon parade expresses hopes for good weather and a bountiful harvest. In autumn, the rice dragon symbolizes full granaries and the wish for another fruitful year. The Double Ninth Festival also brings the custom of climbing to higher ground, offering a moment to reflect on home, family and hopes for harvests to come. #artandculture
