Recently, Yangcheng Evening News reporters visited the South China Headquarters of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Fuxi Farm in Zengcheng, Guangzhou, the first Fuxi Farm in South China. Li Zhipeng, head of the farm, said the team is exploring smart agriculture technologies.
To suit the characteristics of paddy fields in South China, the team modified the Honghu T704 smart agricultural machine, improving its wading and waterproof performance and optimizing its paddy field tires. During this year's late-season rice planting, the farm used 10 paddy-field machines to carry out land preparation, puddling and other operations in a roughly 200-mu "science and technology pilot zone."
For soil testing, the team's self-developed equipment can detect about nine soil parameters—including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter—within 30 cm of soil depth. The system converts the data into prescriptive soil nutrient maps based on a 10m-by-10m grid, enabling variable rate fertilization. Earlier this year, the team carried out soil testing on about 20,000 mu in Zengcheng District in about 10 days, with an accuracy rate above 85%.
The farm also uses remote sensing satellites to monitor soil moisture, weather and crop growth, and collects data on pests and diseases, soil moisture and other indicators to gradually build a full-cycle rice growth model. This year's task is to collect data across the entire rice growth cycle, from seedling cultivation to harvest, with the team taking part in rice cultivation in a 2,200-mu area. The model is still under development, and in the future the team hopes to move from plot-level management to "plant-level management."
The farm is developing an agricultural service platform that allows farmers and agricultural equipment operators to match supply and demand through an app. Li described it as "like Didi ride-hailing." The platform is currently used mainly in the farm's own planting areas. Related agricultural services will be rolled out in the third phase of the project and are expected to be completed between 2029 and 2030.
In early spring 2026, South China's first Fuxi Farm Demonstration Zone was established in Zengcheng, Guangzhou. The farm's roughly 200-mu science and technology pilot zone is tasked with testing new technologies and equipment, with mature technologies to be promoted on a larger scale.
