On October 9th, a work report meeting for the second phase of the first compilation of the "Guangdong Qiaopi Document Series (Chaoshan Volume)" was held at Shantou University. The compilation team is reorganizing about 200,000 Chaoshan Qiaopi documents—currently scattered across various institutions and private collectors—by shifting from "storage by individual piece" to "storage by family," thereby grouping letters from the same family together. The series is planned to be published in 40 volumes within five years, with the first compilation scheduled for release before the end of 2026, and the second and third compilations to be rolled out successively between 2027 and 2028.
Qiaopi refers to a special type of historical document that combines family letters and remittance receipts sent back to their homeland by overseas Chinese in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the Qiaopi archives included in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, Chaoshan Qiaopi account for about 60%. Currently, there are about 200,000 Qiaopi documents held in public and private collections in Shantou, including 93,000 in the Shantou City Archives and about 40,000 in the Shantou University Library.
The "Guangdong Qiaopi Document Series" is a major cultural project for Guangdong's 15th Five-Year Plan period. Jointly launched by the Guangdong People's Publishing House and the Lingnan Ancient Books Publishing House, it is divided into four major volumes: Chaoshan, Jiangmen Wuyi, Meizhou and Guangfu. The Chaoshan volume adopts the principle of "family-based categorization and chronological arrangement." Relying on the Qiaopi database of Shantou University and the general catalog of Qiaopi in the Shantou City Archives, the team filters and groups documents from more than 170,000 metadata entries. Each Qiaopi letter undergoes chronological authentication, is arranged by year and is accompanied by a brief commentary.
The Chaoshan volume has established an academic committee chaired by Professor Chen Chunsheng, with Professor Zhang Guoxiong and Professor Zhang Xiaoxin serving as general editors-in-chief. Chen Jingxi, editor-in-chief of the Chaoshan volume, stated that compiling the series will provide primary source materials for researching the history of overseas Chinese and the society and culture of their hometowns, while also promoting the preservation and revitalization of Qiaopi and nurturing research talent.
