On October 8th, installation of the catwalk mesh began on the Shiziyang Bridge, under Contract Section T9 of the Shiziyang Channel project, a core transportation hub project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The work will provide a stable platform for the subsequent installation of the huge main cables. Each catwalk is 6.26 meters wide, making it the widest construction catwalk on any suspension bridge worldwide.

The Shiziyang Channel serves as another major east-west transportation artery across the Pearl River Estuary. Upon completion, it will further enhance the Guangdong expressway network and foster the integrated development of the GBA city cluster. As a key project along the route, the Shiziyang Bridge is a double-deck steel truss suspension bridge with a main span of 2,180 meters. It sets five world records for double-deck suspension bridges in terms of main span length, number of traffic lanes, main tower height, anchorage foundation, and main cable diameter.
The catwalks serve as temporary elevated working platforms for superstructure construction on the Shiziyang Bridge, including main cable installation. The catwalk system consists of two walkways, one on the upstream side and the other on the downstream side. To overcome construction challenges posed by the exceptionally long 2,180-meter main span, frequent typhoons in the Pearl River Estuary, and complex high-altitude wind conditions, the project team conducted targeted research to address key technical challenges. The resulting catwalk system has a width of 6.26 meters on each side, making it a world-class installation. It is about 50% wider than conventional catwalks used on long-span suspension bridges and can support multiple simultaneous operations during the installation of the huge main cables, which weigh 43,000 tons and have a diameter of approximately 1.5 meters.

Each catwalk is supported by 16 high-strength steel wire ropes, each with a diameter of 60 mm and a tensile strength of 2,160 MPa. The embedded components for the load-bearing ropes underwent specialized load testing to verify their anchoring capacity, and the entire catwalk system also underwent wind tunnel testing. The project became the first in the industry to deploy rope climbing robots for rope inspection and measurement, reducing the risks of manual measurements at height.
The project has also established an integrated intelligent monitoring system combining structural force monitoring, equipment status monitoring, and early weather warnings. The project team is currently laying the catwalk mesh, installing guardrail ropes, and erecting transverse access walkways, with catwalk installation scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
