Shishui Village in Yanghe Town, Gaoming District, lies at the foot of Foshan's highest peak and is the largest administrative village in the city in terms of area. Mountainous and forested land accounts for most of its 65.7 square kilometers, where ecological protection red lines must not be crossed. With the momentum of the "High-Quality Development Project for Hundreds of Counties, Thousands of Towns and Tens of Thousands of Villages," the wheels of change began to turn for Shishui Village, and this fertile mountain landscape began to show new vitality.

Across the village, distinctive ecological agriculture is thriving. The cultivation of specialty agricultural products such as perfume lemons, agarwood, persimmons, and Golden Peony tea continues to expand. Meanwhile, demonstration planting of research rice varieties such as Huangxiang Simiao rice using mixed-cropping methods and experimental cultivation of non-GMO papayas are underway through close collaboration between research institutes and local villagers. This year, Shishui Village also harvested its first batch of locally grown fruit bamboo shoots. The establishment of this 220-mu (approximately 14.7 hectares) fruit bamboo shoot cultivation base would not have been possible without the efforts of a group of people working behind the scenes. After Shishui Village established Foshan Gaoming Shishui Project Investment Co., Ltd. in 2024, professional managers Yang Shengdong, Li Yaohui, and Fan Jiahua from the Foshan Communications Investment Group were based there. They became new-generation farmers, bringing expertise from other professional fields to work alongside villagers in developing agriculture.

Every year, the harvest season for this type of bamboo shoot runs from March to October. "One distinctive feature of this fruit bamboo shoot is that its oxalic acid content is comparable to that of common fruits; it has a crisp, sweet taste and can be eaten raw," Yang explained. By 2028, when the entire base is expected to reach peak production, the yield is expected to reach approximately 2,000 jin (about 1,000 kilograms) per mu (about 667 square meters), with an estimated annual output of 450,000 jin (about 225,000 kilograms) and an annual production value of 1.8 million yuan.

Bolstered by multiple factors, including the visitor traffic generated by the two major scenic areas, Zaomu Mountain and Youlong Gorge, as well as the results of ecological improvement in the Xikeng Tributary Ecological Cleaning Small Watershed, a diverse range of rural businesses is flourishing in Shishui. The village is now home to 31 restaurants and three distinctive homestays.
