The Mid-Autumn Festival holiday officially began on September 25th. Driven by a wave of people taking three days of annual leave to create a 13-day break, many people who had originally planned to set out during the National Day holiday brought their long-haul travel forward to September 25th. Data from Qunar showed that searches for "Mid-Autumn moon-viewing" and "autumn sightseeing trips" surged by 310% week-on-week, while domestic flight bookings on the first day of the Mid-Autumn holiday soared by more than 60% year-on-year, making it "the hottest Mid-Autumn Festival holiday" on record.
Data from Tongcheng Travel showed that on the first day of the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, family reunions took priority, followed by short-distance tours. Local and short-distance tour bookings accounted for more than 60%, while bookings for tickets to nearby scenic spots rose 36% compared with the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. In Guangdong, bookings by local users for nearby hotels and scenic spot tickets on the first day of the Mid-Autumn holiday rose 31% and 48%, respectively, compared with the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. Guangdong's top five travel destinations were Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan and Huizhou, while the top five source markets for cross-provincial trips to Guangdong were Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Fujian and Hubei.
Some travelers headed north or west to chase fall colors at their "best viewing time," driving a 170% week-on-week increase in searches for "autumn-chasing" flight routes. Long-distance routes from South and East China saw particularly rapid growth. On the first day of the holiday, bookings for flights from Guangzhou to Lanzhou increased by 210% year-on-year, while those from Hangzhou to Urumqi rose by 160%.
Many travelers from northern China also chose to head south to "catch the last of summer" or rush to the seaside before temperatures dropped sharply. Qunar noted that flight bookings to the warm-weather city of Mangshi rose 190%, while those to Luzhou, Qionghai and other destinations also more than doubled. Families traveling with children embraced a relaxed "escape the cold and head for the sea" mode, with bookings for Beijing–Haikou flights tripling year-on-year.
