Liantan Piaose: A Century-Old Folk Art Rooted in Local Tradition
City Life | Every year on the 20th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, crowds fill the streets of Liantan Town in Yunan County, Yunfu. On elevated platforms, children appear to float in mid-air, dressed in flowing robes and portraying characters from folklore, opera, and historical stories. They seem as light as drifting clouds, yet each performance relies on carefully engineered supports and the dedication of generations of local performers. This is Piaose (the Parade of Floating Characters), a traditional folk art that has been passed down for more than a century. Today, Liantan Piaose remains one of the most anticipated highlights of the town’s annual temple fair, continuing to connect local communities with their shared cultural heritage.#citylife
