WorldSkills competitor turns gold craftsmanship into a thriving business

On September 22nd, the 48th WorldSkills Competition will be held in Shanghai. Meanwhile, in Shenzhen's Shuibei("China's Jewelry Capital"), former national competitor Guo Zhipeng and his team have established "Master Goldsmith Workshop," turning the pursuit of perfection honed at WorldSkills into a thriving business for everyday consumers.

The workshop's core members are all top-five finishers in top-tier competitions, including WorldSkills and the Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China. These skilled craftsmen have brought not only WorldSkills process standards into the marketplace, but also their training methods and experience."Retail stores" and "training" form the dual-engine business model of Master Goldsmith Workshop. The retail stores serve end consumers, allowing customers to bring in old gold and have it processed into jewelry through a transparent, open-workshop process. The training programs, meanwhile, are designed for jewelry store owners and industry practitioners nationwide, teaching goldsmithing techniques and methods to control material losses. Currently, the workshop operates four stores across China, with a team of over 30 people. Most of them were born after 2000, and three are recognized as National Technical Experts.

The precision craftsmanship developed through the WorldSkills Competition is also reshaping the industry. Gold processing inevitably involves some material loss. The industry average is generally between 2‰ and 3‰, meaning that 0.2 to 0.3 grams of gold is lost during the processing of every 100 grams. By applying a material cutting calculation formula adapted from WorldSkills standards, Guo has reduced gold loss to below 0.8‰. The industry has also responded positively to this ability to transform competition-level precision into industry standards. Guo's team has pioneered a new path for commercializing WorldSkills achievements, showing that WorldSkills standards can be transformed into a successful business and a replicable benchmark.
