In the sweltering heat of July, Monica Iosefo, a surgical nurse from Samoa, is fully immersed in the full spectrum of surgical oncology nursing at the general surgery ward of Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University. Making her first trip to Guangdong, she has been deeply impressed by a well‑established, standardized system for oncology diagnosis, treatment and care.

This is Monica's first time in Guangzhou, and she arrived at Nanfang Hospital with great excitement, cherishing this rare learning opportunity. "I hope to gain a thorough understanding of the complete clinical workflow during this training, familiarize myself with the local healthcare environment as soon as possible, and learn from the nurses and doctors here," she said. Monica noted that Samoa's domestic healthcare system lags far behind Guangdong's, with a lack of supporting treatment methods that leaves many cancer patients without access to standardized care.

During ward observations and hands-on training sessions, Monica carefully compared the differences between the two regions' healthcare systems. "Here, I have seen many treatment optionsin cancer that are completely unavailable in Samoa. Comprehensive postoperative rehabilitation and quality control throughout the entire nursing process are healthcare resources that our country urgently needs," she said."The medical staff at Nanfang Hospital have been very friendly. They have shared their clinical experience with me without reservation, allowing me to gain a great deal from this training," Monica added.

Halfway through the month-long training program, Monica has already mapped out her plans for after returning home. She said she would share the standardized nursing procedures and oncology rehabilitation care experience she learned in Guangzhou with her colleagues in Samoa, helping address gaps in local oncology nursing and providing better support for more cancer patients.

"I hope such cross-border medical training programs can continue, allowing more Samoan healthcare professionals to come to Guangdong to learn advanced medical knowledge and skills," Monica said. She hopes ongoing exchange programs will help safeguard the health of people in Pacific Island nations.

萨摩亚护士：“首次来华收获良多”｜岛国医护在广州

7月盛夏，在南方医科大学南方医院普通外科病区，来自萨摩亚的外科护士 Monica Iosefo（莫妮卡・约塞福）沉浸式学习外科肿瘤护理全流程。首次踏足广东的她，被完善规范的肿瘤诊疗护理体系深深触动。

这是莫妮卡第一次来到广州，初到南方医院的她满心欣喜，格外珍惜这次难得的学习机会。“我希望从本次培训吃透完整临床工作流程，尽快熟悉这里的诊疗环境，多向院内护士、医师交流取经。”莫妮卡坦言，萨摩亚本土医疗体系与广东存在很大差距，当地缺乏配套治疗手段，许多肿瘤患者难以获得规范救治。

在病房观摩、实操学习的过程中，她细致对比两地医疗差距：“在这里我见到许多萨摩亚完全没有的肿瘤治疗方案，完整的术后康复、全程护理质控体系，都是我们国家急缺的医疗资源。南方医院的医护人员十分友善，工作中毫无保留和我分享临床实操经验，让我收获满满。”

为期一个月的培训过半，莫妮卡心中早已规划好归国后的行动。她表示，回国后会把在广州学到的标准化护理流程、肿瘤康复护理经验完整分享给萨摩亚同事，填补当地肿瘤护理的空白，帮助更多癌症病患。

“我期盼这样的跨境医疗培训能够持续开展，让更多萨摩亚医疗从业者来到广东学习先进医护知识。” 莫妮卡说，希望依托持续的交流项目，守护南太平洋岛国民众健康。
