On July 11th, a short film screening event of the Maritime Guangdong Program was held atthe University of New South Wales(UNSW) in Sydney.Co-hosted by the Yangcheng Evening News Group and the University of New South Wales Chinese Student Association (UNSW CSA), the event was themed "Echoes from the South" and featured four works by young directors: "Migratory Bird", "Swimming Lesson", "How Can I Rid My Mind of Her", and "Oblivion".

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the sister‑city relationship between Guangzhou and Sydney. Over the past four decades, the two cities have deepened their cooperation in economy and trade, culture and tourism, science and education, and urban governance.

The four films, with a total runtime of about 80 minutes, are all primarily in Cantonese. Together, they offer a contemporary portrait of migration, separation, and the idea of home, turning the hometown dialect into an emotional bridge that spans mountains and seas.

Reflecting on her experience of watching these Chinese films overseas, He Xinyi, a media studies student at the university, observed that cultural identity becomes more tangible in moments like this. "Back home, so many things are just part of everyday life, so you don't really notice how they relate to you. But when you hear the dialects, and see the food, tea plantations, seaside towns and family relationships on screen here in Sydney, those ordinary details suddenly strike you as incredibly real."
Since its launch in 2023, the Maritime Guangdong Young Director Support Program has been committed to bringing Chinese‑language films by emerging talent to a global audience. To date, the program's films have screened in more than ten countries, including Malaysia, France, Japan, Russia, the United States, Poland, Thailand, Canada, South Korea, Croatia, and Singapore, and have attracted over 100,000 viewers in total.
