"The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is the only region in the world that simultaneously possesses both mechatronics and artificial intelligence technologies." This assertion by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlights Guangdong's unique advantages in developing the next-generation mechatronics industry.
As a major manufacturing province, Guangdong boasts both the nation's most complete mechatronics supply chain and its leading AI industry ecosystem, standing at a critical juncture where its manufacturing sector transitions from digitalization to intelligence.
Mechatronics is the foundation of manufacturing in Guangdong. Competitive industries such as electronic information, smart equipment, robotics, and new energy vehicles are, at their core, the products of a deep integration of mechanics, electronics, networking, and intelligence. Guangdong possesses the most comprehensive mechatronics supply chain and the densest communication infrastructure in China. The combination of the two creates ideal hardware conditions for the piloting and implementation of new technologies.
In 2025, Guangdong's regional gross domestic product reached 14.58 trillion yuan, maintaining its position as the largest provincial economy in China for many consecutive years. Operating revenue of industrial enterprises above the designated size exceeded 19 trillion yuan, continuing to lead the nation. Furthermore, the proportions of high-tech manufacturing and equipment manufacturing in the industrial added value above the designated size both exceeded 30%.
If mechatronics represents an entire industrial chain, robotics is undoubtedly its most crucial component. Data recently disclosed by Guangdong's taxation authorities shows that industrial robots serve as the bedrock of the province's robotics industry. In 2025, the output reached 336,300 units, accounting for 43.5% of the national total and ranking first in the country for six consecutive years. Between 2019 and 2024, production surged from 44,700 units to 246,800 units, with an equally remarkable growth rate.
The next phase of mechatronics is destined to be deeply integrated with artificial intelligence. Data from the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Guangdong Province indicates that the scale of Guangdong's core AI industry exceeded 220 billion yuan in 2024, a year-on-year increase of approximately 25%, firmly placing it in the top tier nationwide. The province is home to 147 national-level specialized and sophisticated "little giant" enterprises in the AI field, ranking first in the country.
Across the four segments of chips, algorithms, terminals, and applications, Guangdong has woven a complete industrial chain. By the end of 2024, the province had established 31 national-level intelligent manufacturing pilot demonstration factories and 99 outstanding use cases, both ranking first nationwide. The combination of topping the country in three metrics—the composite computing power index, the number of specialized and sophisticated AI enterprises, and industrial robot output—has laid a solid foundation for Guangdong in the new wave of industrial competition.
