Guangdong-Guangxi cooperation brings agricultural specialties to Greater Bay Area

The 2026 Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum was held recently in Beijing. Under the theme "Uniting Global Efforts to Advance Poverty Reduction," the forum brought together around 350 representatives from agriculture and poverty-reduction authorities of various countries, foreign embassies in China, international organizations, enterprises, think tanks and other institutions to discuss global poverty reduction and development.

At a parallel forum, Guangdong shared its practices and reflections on East-West cooperation. Guangxi is endowed with rich agricultural resources, including a number of national geographical indication agricultural products such as Baise mangoes and Rong'an kumquats. Its annual vegetable output exceeds 30 million tonnes, while its fruit output tops 20 million tonnes. However, due to its remote location, high logistics costs, inadequate standardization and limited brand influence, local agricultural products have long faced the dilemma of higher output without higher income and difficulty commanding fair prices despite their quality.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of China's largest consumer markets. Building on the complementary strengths of Guangdong and Guangxi, the Guangdong-Guangxi cooperation work team has worked to transform consumption-driven assistance from short-term sales promotion into the long-term development of an ecosystem. It has created a closed-loop approach covering quality control, brand building, channel expansion, industrial extension and institutional support, helping specialty agricultural products move out of the mountains and into the Greater Bay Area.

At the same time, Guangdong-Guangxi cooperation has promoted the extension of agriculture from a single sales stage to the full chain of production, processing, sales, and cultural tourism, thereby increasing the overall added value and comprehensive benefits of the industry. Today, projects built with collaboration funds, including a mango puree production line and an automated sacha inchi processing line, have achieved annual processing capacities of more than 100,000 tonnes of mangoes and 720 tonnes of sacha inchi. These facilities turn undersized and off-grade fruit into high-value-added products such as ice pops and frozen fruit chunks. In 2025, exports of processed mango products from Tiandong County, Guangxi, exceeded 4,000 tonnes, with output value reaching 50 million yuan.

Industrial collaboration lies at the heart of these assistance efforts. Drawing on the resource endowments of Guangxi and Guizhou, Guangdong has helped build a number of enduring, locally rooted industrial clusters. To date, under the country's mechanisms for collaboration between the eastern and western regions, 225 industrial parks have been jointly built, 220.1 billion yuan in actual paid-in corporate investment has been facilitated, and 21 distinctive industrial clusters have been developed in line with local conditions. These efforts have helped Guangxi and Guizhou cultivate 15 nationally leading specialty industries, including mangoes and thorn pears.
