A single piece of qiaopi carries homesickness across the seas. "Dear You," a Chaoshan film centered on qiaopi (documents of "letters, reports, account books and remittance receipts") and directed by Chaoyang-born director Lan Hongchun, has recently gained strong public attention. Scheduled for nationwide release on April 30th, the film has not only moved audiences with its portrayal of family bonds, trust and devotion that transcend mountains and seas, but also offered them an immersive glimpse into Shantou's distinctive charm as a hometown of overseas Chinese and its rich cultural heritage.

The film features many of Shantou's signature landmarks, condensing into its frames the struggles of Chaoshan ancestors who journeyed to Nanyang (Southeast Asia), and the collective memories of the overseas Chinese hometown. Drawing on its unique filming-location resources and rich qiaopi cultural heritage, Shantou is further tapping the potential of film- and TV-driven cultural tourism. By linking together the film's shooting locations, the city invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of the film during the May Day holiday and immerse themselves in the cultural depth and patriotic sentiment of this century-old hometown of overseas Chinese.
Riding on the popularity of "Dear You," Shantou has newly launched the "Follow Grandma through Shantou" themed cultural tourism route, along with a package of special perks. In addition, local authorities across culture and tourism, commerce, transport and market regulation, together with Nan'ao County, have joined hands to roll out a series of visitor-friendly measures and thoughtful services, presenting a generous cultural tourism feast for the May Day holiday and inviting visitors from near and far to discover Shantou through light and shadow, and experience the charm of this overseas Chinese hometown.
Along the route, a variety of immersive programs will be set up, including film-themed set displays, film stills exhibitions, interactive qiaopi experiences and site-specific live performances, allowing visitors to stroll through Shantou's streets and lanes by following the scenes of the film. Meanwhile, businesses across Shantou are also taking part, offering exclusive discounts and perks to holders of movie ticket stubs. During the May Day holiday, residents and visitors can present their "Dear You" movie ticket stubs to enjoy multiple perks, including dining discounts, cultural and creative product offers, and free admission to selected venues.
