Maritime Guangdong Program brings Lingnan stories to Los Angeles

Recently, the Los Angeles stop of the 2026 Maritime Guangdong Program global roadshow, jointly hosted by Yangcheng Evening News Group (Yangcheng Evening News) and KNOT FILM, was held under the theme "Where Time Settles." Two short films were screened, each noted for its distinctive style and emotional depth. Though rooted in Lingnan's distinct cultural and regional setting, both works explore a universal question: how individuals respond to the passage of time and the sweep of history. Spanning different moments in history, the films invite audiences to observe the subtle choices and inner emotions of ordinary people against broader historical backdrops.

"Hi, Marilyn" turns its lens to the eve of Macao's return to China in 1999, delicately capturing how individuals in a singular historical moment find solace and grow through emotional connection. "Reunion," by contrast, portrays the story of a Chaoshan family in a lyrical, folk-inflected manner. Through dialect and a surreal atmosphere, the film explores profound themes of family memory, life and death, and emotional healing.

What unites the two films screened at the event is their emotional resonance. "Rather than focusing on grand narratives, this event pays closer attention to how ordinary people, amid the tides of history, seek a sense of belonging through family ties, living spaces, and identity," said Xue Yang, the event's curator and producer.

Launched by Yangcheng Evening News Group in 2023, the Maritime Guangdong Young Director Support Program has remained committed to introducing the fresh perspectives of young Chinese filmmakers to audiences around the world. Its global journey has taken it to Malaysia, France, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the United States, Poland, and Australia, among other destinations.
